Amazon.co.uk Review
The first three entries in the Clive Barker-originated series are presented in IHellraiser: The Collector's Edition/I, a box set which includes Barker's 1986 original, and the first two sequels, Tony Randel's IHellbound/I and Anthony Hickox's IHell on Earth/I. Watching the films run together, you can see the process whereby a twisted original vision from the British writer-director is gradually hammered out into the stuff of an American direct-to-video franchise. Even the first film suffers slightly as a story written to take place in London is rendered puzzling by the decision to dub minor players with American accents, and by the time of the third film there is only the odd flash of sm imagery to distinguish the series from the IElm Street/I or any other franchise. p Along the way, there are a few great and many good things: the nasty little family drama of the first film, played by Andrew Robinson and Clare Higgins, as a marriage is literally torn apart by the bloody, skinless brother-lover in the attic, and the still-striking look of the series' major demons, the Cenobites. Part II is a mess, but has a certain grand dementia and Part III at least gives the films' poster boy, Doug Bradley's Pinhead, centre screen as he bids to become the Freddy Krueger of the body-piercing set. p BOn the DVD:/B IHellraiser: The Collector's Edition/I presents parts I and II in anamorphic widescreen, while III is cramped at 4:3 full-screen: the transfers are okay if not sumptuous, a little soft if aptly gloomy. Region 1 releases have director and crew commentaries and retrospective documentaries that are sadly not included here--though completists note: this edition boasts on-set cast and director interviews (five minutes apiece for I and II) which are not on the American set. I and II also have trailers (and II has a printable stills gallery and a pointless extra which consists of extracts from the film grouped together as "sub-plots"), but III is strictly no-frills. --IKim Newman/I

5 out of 5 stars The Godfather of HORROR!   July 16, 2004
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

The first installment of the trilogy has to be one of the greatest films. An amazing an unique story into Clive Barkers morbid imagination. Fantastic make-up and special effects on the Cenobites and Frank. p The second and the third (Hellbound and Hell On Earth) are certainly competative to the first. Unfortunately they both lack the horrors that the Cenobites bought to the first film. The third film is completely devoted to Pinhead and like the second lacks in scare value. Gore on the other hand is top notch on all 3.p All in all if you like your horror this is an amazing buy! Imaginative storylines, half decent cast and stunning SFX. One for the collection

4 out of 5 stars The law of diminishing returns is proved once again.   December 10, 2003

Let me begin by saying that this is a decent pack, and well worth having in your collection.pHowever, I don't reccomend that you watch the films in chronological order. Watch them like this: 3,1 and 2 - or else by the time you have watched the amiguous beauty and horror of the first film degenerate into the hackneyed American slasher fodder of the 3rd it's long stopped being frightening, and become a mail studded cliche. In fact, there are moments in number 3 (Joey crying out to her dead father, the line from the camera-headed cenobite: "are you ready for your close-up" etc.) that make you cringe.pPinhead gets centre stage in the final installment, which is a double edged sword in my opinion. Doug Bradley is talented and nasty enough to pull it off, but you can't help but feeling that the de-mystification of Pinhead as made him much less scary than the previous installments, where it was merely the threat of his appearance that caused your stomach to churn.pThe first 2 are classics however - and feel like 2 halves of the same story. Claire Higgins is just on the good side of proper B-movie-ish, as is Ashley Lawrence. The effects are dated, and yet charming for anyone a little disappointed with the sterility of modern CGI.pAnd there are some truly horrible moments: the distusting re-birth of frank in film 1, or Doctor Channard being transformed into a cenobite by some barely disguised phallus shaped objects: ". . . and to think he hesitated . . ."pSo watch number 3 first, laugh or cringe, and then afterwards remind yourself how great the first 2 films were.

5 out of 5 stars HELLRAISER (1,2 and 3)THE BEST HORROR MOVIE EVER MADE   November 27, 2003

HELLRAISER IS A FILM THAT DID NOT SCARE ME MUCH BUT IT HADE SOME OF THE BEST SPECIAL EFECTS I HAD EVER SEEN. CLIVE BARKERS IDEA OF THE CENABITES , FRANK , PINHEAD , THE FISHING HOOK CHAINS AND THE BOX ALL SUMMED UP TO ONE OF THE MOST HORRENDOUS AND FANTASTIC SCARY MOVIES I HAD EVER SEEN.pHELLBOUND WAS ALSO A FANTASTIC FILM WITH THE DOCTOR AND MOST IMPORTANTLE PINHEADS HELL. IT'S A SHAME THAT THE DOCTOR KILLED ALL THE CENABITES AND PINHEAD BECAUSE I WOULD OF LIKED TO SE THEM WHIP HIS ASS.pHELL ON EARTH(HELLRAISER 3)brALTOUGH THE ORIGANAL ACTORS DID NOT STAR IN THIS FILM IT WAS STILL WAS A VERY VERY GOOD FILM. MY BEST PARTS WERE WHEN YOU SAW DOC AS THE CAMERA MAN AND THE PORTABLE CD PLAYER MAN WITH ALL THOSE CD'S STUCK IN HIS FACE.pNEXT TIME YOU WANT TO RENT OR BUY A FILM CHOSE HELLRAISER AND THEN HELLBOUND AND THEN THE 3RD ONE OR RENT OR BUY THEM ALL AT ONCE. BELIVE ME YOU HAVE TO SE THEASE FILMS!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Real Horror - Realistic Gore   September 21, 2003
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

The Hellraiser trilogy got better as it went along. The first was a remarkable story and as more money was spent on the latter two films, they have even more dramatic special effects. What they have in common is that the ideas and visuals are extreme. They are the stuff of our nightmares. Demons sneak into our bedrooms as the walls come apart at the corners. And these are demons that are honey-tongued and know our most secret (and sick?) desires.pThere is lots of blood, gore and mutilation. Some of it is tough to watch.pBut in the end, good triumphs over evil - Just about!

5 out of 5 stars A must see for any horror fan!!!   April 19, 2003
Clive Bakers Hellraiser trilogy is just horror at it's best. The cenobites, angels of hell are summoned when a young girl solves a mysterious puzzle box. They have the ability to show their victims pure pain and suffering. pThe box set is a bargin as each DVD seperately would cost you around 20 and the box set it self, 24.99 so buy it today!! pThe Cenobites have such sites to show you . . .
