| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Paul Newman and his IButch Cassidy/I director, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct for comedy has never been sharper. Great support from Strother Martin, Paul Dooley, and the rest. --ITom Keogh, Amazon.com/I

the best shot ever at sports genre October 27, 2008 br /Paul newman is class itself as the leather adorned ,abusive ,crooked but delightful hockey coach in a great sports comedy dealing with the on field and behind the scenes adventures of an ice-hockey team .br /br /it is screwball, pantomime ,satire whatever but never has a dull moment to reckon .br /br /there are multiple strands and lots of foul mouted, sordid ,sporty men with loads of profanities both verbal and visual but it is all relevantly integrated into the compact script.br /br /roy hill was a really great maker who had a great sense of comic timing and he has a script to reckon with a fabulous cast -the results are an exemplary sports genre comedy for all times.br /br /newman aged really gracefully and he looks so comfortable in his glorious middle -age with the younger players ,this is a very amusing movie despite it's conventional theme and somewhat predictable premises because it is great entertainment .br /br /look out for micheal ontkeans hilarious dance act-striptease on the pitch -a must see.br /- jbz7879
My favourite Paul Newman Film October 2, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I doubt anyone will ever read this review but I just thought I'd post it anyway after the sad death of Paul Newman. For all his "great" roles, this is my favourite, one of the funniest films ever made and if they show anything on telly as an example of Newman's genius, this should be on there representing his comedy class and his generosity in letting others steal the show at times..
Forget the fact that its ice hockey... January 4, 2006 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
As stated previously, you don't have to be a hockey fan to enjoy this film. If you have the ability to laugh and like the thought of going to AE with your sides aching and your eyes streaming, watch this.brFrom the start, you just now that this is going to be something special. Paul Newman plays an excellent role as the Chiefs coach with his own long list of issues but thrives in giving the Ice Hockey crowds what they want after the debtors close in on the team....blood.brTo aid in this onslaught, the Hanson brothers are brought in, the three spectacled coke machine murderers. Their casual approach to second nature violence is an absolute gem and will keep you laughing your lungs out.brI thoroughly enjoyed this despite it showing its age, if you watch it, you WILL enjoy it. Don't watch it alone as you will need some help to recover from the laughter.
Slap Shot, the ultimate sports film of the 1970's November 22, 2003 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
Forget Rollerball, the real sports film of the 70's was slap shot, filmed in same mood as MASH, a light hearted look at America, with a better soundtrack than its contemporaries. It has a slow start, its only fault, but it builds up into a good black comedy, and the few cinematic seconds when the Hanson brothers are released onto the rink, must rate as one of the funniest moments committed to film. This is the best of American Cinema, without the boring polish and pretty faces that Hollywood usually vomits up.
Slap Shot - Side splitting humour. October 13, 2002 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
A film for everyone who laughed at anything. From sheer slapstick humour to black comic violence, it is a sheer eye waterer. The Hansons should have had ther own film.p It has lots of set plays where you just wait to see what happens next, from the drunk hockey star to the poser - it's got it all. From a bunch of loser with no back bone to the roughest toughest bunch of winners in the league it builds up to a bloodbath then leaves you completely bemused with the weirdest ending to a sports film ever. pYou have to see this film. If only just to say you have, but once isn't enough.
