Amazon.co.uk Review
Writer-director Kevin Smith (IClerks/I) makes a huge leap in sophistication with this strong story about a comic-book artist (Ben Affleck) who falls in love with a lesbian (Joey Lauren Adams) and actually gets his wish that she love him, too. Their relationship is attacked, however, by his business partner (Jason Lee), who pulls a very unsubtle Iago act to cast doubt over the whole affair. The film has the same sense of insiderness as IClerks/I--this time, Smith takes us within the arcane, funny world of comic-book cultism--but the themes of jealousy, deceit and the high price of growing up enough to truly care for someone make this a very satisfying movie. I--Tom Keogh/I

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly moving   October 7, 2008
This film really did defy my expectations. The film tells the story of Ben Affleck, who with his life long friend now runs a small comic. Whilst at a comic book event, Affleck meets Alyssa, who is funny, attractive and shares Affleck's interests. The one problem is Alyssa is a lesbian. Despite this, Affleck and Alyssa develop a very deep friendship, and over time, they realise that despite the issue of sexual orientation, Alyssa and Affleck realise they are meant to be together and embark on a passionate romantic relationship.br /br /However, things do not go well. Alyssa's lesbian friends feel she is "sleeping with the enemy" by dating a man, and Affleck's best friend does not trust her. As he begins to uncover shocking things in her relationship history, he and Affleck almost come to blows. The whole relationship explodes when a tearful Alyssa admits that she has been with other men, which stings Affleck.br /br /The film is rather mixed. Some scenes in the film are genuinely moving, and in places the script is thought provoking and profound. This is particularly true when Silent Bob explains what the phrase "Chasing Amy" means. Yet in other places, the film is rather immature, and the script is filled with references to masturbation, porn, sex and swearing. The lead actress does also have a voice that is, to put it politely, an acquired taste (it is rather scratchy and squeaky).br /br /All in all, the film is one that I found surprisingly moving and intense. Whilst it is punctuated with immaturity and foul language, the central message is one that should have universal appeal. Fans of Mallrats and Clerks will especially enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars Premise leads to a surprise   April 9, 2008

It's a comedy about a comic book artist falling in love with a lesbian. To most it may sound like the premise of a woeful high school/teenager comedy but beneath the plot lies an intelligent comedy with a nice touch.br /br /Simply put it's far away from your average high school comedy and worthy of anyone's collection.br /br /Ben Affleck plays the comic book artist, Holden McNeil, who's never been in love and he's quite easy to warm to as he falls for Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams). They immediately seem to have an attraction and bond with each other which only develops as the film and their relationship grows. Jason Lee also does well as he takes a step down from a lead role in Mallrats to being Ben Affleck's best friend and fellow artist on their comic.br /br /The story has the traditional up's and down's but they're surprisingly poignant despite the subject matter they involve. I can't imagine too many films were a threesome could actually be considered as a serious resolution to solve an issue for example. br /br /All the usual suspect's from Kevin Smith's films also feature briefly with Matt Damon even having a brief, blink and you'll miss it, part. Dwight Ewell is particularly amusing as a fellow comic book artist who produces a violent, anti-white comic but is actually a secret homosexual.br /br /This is definitely a must see and a film I will happily go back and watch many a time. From someone who's never been into comic book's and isn't overly keen on Kevin Smith's films that's a mark of how good a film this truly is.

This is an awful film. After two minutes of the terrible female lead and her incredibly annoying voice, I wanted to blow her brains out. That's the only reason why I would want to chase her. After 3 minutes of her though, I wanted to blow my own brains out.

5 out of 5 stars SMITH DOES IT AGAIN!!!   September 30, 2007

Smith's most personal and emotional film will have you gripped, choked, laughing hysterically and grinning from ear to ear.br /br /More of a romantic comedy than an indie pop culture flick, but a cheesy Hugh Grant flick it is NOT; this is how such films SHOULD be - realistic. No hearts, flowers and unbelievable happy endings; rather crazy, unpredictable and relentlessly entertaining.br /br /A great turn from Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams who act their asses off. A teriffic turn from Jason Lee that never fails to have me in hysterics no matter how many times I see it. And, yes, Jay and Silent Bob appear too - surprisingly in a pivotal scene.br /br /The scene where Banky and Alyssa discuss their sexual inujries is sure to have you in stitches and THAT scene in the car/rain is sure to have even the toughest of people with a lump in their throat.br /br /A MUST-HAVE for all Smith fans.br /br /Oh, and a great analysis of the racist undertones in the Star Wars saga - genius, just genius.br /br /BUY IT NOW!

4 out of 5 stars Quick Reviews!   September 11, 2007

Chasing Amy, easily the most emotional of all of Smith's, and definately the most serious, though don't let that put you off- there is still plenty of humour, wit, profanity, and one-liners. Smith may not be a great director, but he is a good story teller, and probably the best man around now for clever quotes, satirical, political, religious, sexual, or gaseous. The story follows a couple of friends who work in the glorious business of comic books, their world turned upside down when they meet a girl who one of them falls for. Naturally, she is a lesbian and nothing good can come of such feelings.br /br /Although I'm not a fan of Affleck, he is always good in Smith's movies. Again though Jason Lee runs riot, proving to be one of the best deliverers of witty dialogue today, and this was years before 'Earl' brought him to the masses. Joey Lauren Adams screaming her lines is extremely affecting and effective, and the movie breaches on heartbreaking almost solely because of her performance. Bob's speech makes more sense with every failed relationship we go through, with every person we leave behind, too scared to talk to them, or commit, whatever. Like Mallrats, this film seems to give the slacker generation a kick in the face- an alarm that we can, and should do something with our lives, though this does not come across as contrived, false, or sentimental. The best romantic comedy of the nineties, if it can be called a romantic comedy. Funny too.br /br /The DVD, usually cheap on Amazon has plenty of interesting extras- a few good deleted scenes, and intersting stuff from the cast and crew.
