pbiMen in Black/i/b/p pThis imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (iGet Shorty/i) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly.i--Tom Keogh/i/p pbiMen in Black II/i/b/p pMore remake than sequel, iMen in Black II/i safely repeats everything that made iMen in Black/i the blockbuster hit of 1997. That's fine if you loved the original's fresh humour, weird aliens and loopy ingenuity, but as sequels go, it's pure deja vu. Make-up wizard Rick Baker is the only iMIB/i alumnus who's trying anything new, while director Barry Sonnenfeld and costars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (as alien-fighting agents Jay and Kay, respectively) are on autopilot with an uninspired screenplay. The quest of a multi-tentacled alien--on Earth in the form of Lara Flynn Boyle--for the light of Zartha requires Jay to deneuralize Kay, whose restored memory contains the key to saving the planet. The tissue-thin premise allows all varieties of special effects--mostly familiar, with some oddly hilarious new stuff tossed in for good measure. Certainly enjoyable as a popcorn distraction, but the iMIB/i magic has worn a bit thin. i--Jeff Shannon/i/p

5 out of 5 stars Cool   August 9, 2007

These two films are briliant because their not from the point of veiw that aliens are big scary monsters their just normal. Its about how aliens are just trying to live their lives on Earth. Will Smith is great in the films aswell as he brings some real funny moments but the one liners and reactions of tommy lee jones are the best. Loads of extra stuff aswell. Including how all the aliens were made because their not all fake looking CGI things. The films have got something for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Wat u think it be, wasnt da MiB u didnot c, erased yo memory   February 15, 2004

I seen both films, and wasnt gonna buy them untill the box set came out - this beuty now being released, means that u kan have both films, in a pretty box set at an Amazon worthy price, and u betta believe it.brAs far as the movies are concerned, Smith pulls off excelent performances (the other in my collection being Bad Boys 12 and Enemy Of The State, but ofcourse there are others). Tommy Lee Jones however is not at his best, yet still manages to hold water when put up agaisnt Smith, however Jones is the better in film two.brIn MiB 1, Smith is a cunning street cop , "the best of the best, of the best" and is invited to join an organisation that seems to elude the public abt as well as the attire is carries. After his name is completely wiped out of all systems, he goes in as Agent J, and is like an apprentise but also a protigy of Agent K (Jones), who already having to lose one partner is now facing the reallity that he too is gettin too old to keep living 37hrs a day (u will c wat i mean). Both faced with an alien race abt to attack the earth, they must find and deliver a marble sized "galaxy" or else all is lost. The story is more based around Smith and the audience follows him as he learns more and more abt the truths abt the people that live in NYC and what the MiB is there for.brMiB 2, is set possibly a year after the end of film one where we find J working his way up the ladder, still being too full of himself for his own good. This time however a small alien crash lands on Earth, and takes form of the first thing it sees - a model in a Victoria's Secrets catalogue (true eye candy). This time J has to find K to restore his memory which is needed again to save the world. Jones plays the innocent character here as J has to tell him all abt his previous escapades with aliens the shape of giant cockroaches and also the role model he used to be to the other agents. We follow him as he goes back over his old life. This film might be based more on grafix, however u get to see more of the MiB and the life which they have to undertake. (Watch out for the Statue of Liberty at the end)brThe story and characters are witty, and will manage to keep ure attention and laffing for the duration of each film (and yes the 1st is slightly better, but plz do not discount the 2nd - it is why i waited for the box set, trust me!)brAltogether this is a box set that is worthy of any DVD collection!

4 out of 5 stars Men In Black 1 + 2 review   January 23, 2003

The thrilling double, high-budget, action/adventeure contains surely Will Smith's finest acting performance to date, and a superb Tommy Lee Jones. The story, set around the MiB, an organisation set up to keep aliens on earth secret, is well explored and woven. The first of the films is the superior, with an evil alien after "Orion's Belt" disgusting enough to make you wretch. The story is predictable, yet the overall impression of the film is excitable and enjoyable. The second is set a few years later, with again the acting talents of the first. This time the graphics take a higher role in the film, including a huge bug that lives in the subway system. tommy Lee Jones is revived from the ignorance of alien life after the end of the previous pic, and again has to fight to save the world from some extra-terrestrials. The viewing audience is large, with a rating of PG, so that anyone from 6-96 can enjoy this hollywood movie. Enjoy!
