4 out of 5 stars Where is the rest?   August 31, 2006

I settled in to watch a series I remembered as gripping the whole family when I was a child. I wasn't disappointed at all, it's a wonderful drama. It only drops one star in my estimation because as noted by other reviewers, someone thought it would be a good idea to re edit it out of episode format into a strange cobbled together single 'film' of great length.br /br /I couldn't believe it when I got to the end of disk two only to find that there were no more. I searched around on the net and I wrote to the BBC shop. Then I discovered this website which suggests and address to write to if you want to see more Onedin Line episodes released on DVD:br /br /http://www.michaelbriant.com/onedin_line.htmbr /br /The address given is:br /br /BBC Commissioning Editorbr /3rd Floorbr /2 Entertain Video Ltdbr /33 Foley Streetbr /London br /W1W 7TLbr /br /Anyone else feel like joining me in a request en masse?br /

3 out of 5 stars No episode breaks   February 4, 2006

Only problem is that instead of having these as separate episodes, as lots of other DVD have, all the episodes on each DVD have been run into 1 with no episode end credits. It makes finding an episode a little bit more difficult as you have to go to the small thumbnails. The end of the episode have been clipped and some dialogue missed. Maybe this was done to fit onto a VHS tape but there should be no reason for this on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Superb   August 24, 2005

I was too young to remember this series but I bought the DVD for my parents who loved it. They lent it back to me so I watched it without high expectations. However, I was riveted to the Onedin Line! The story is fast paced with plenty of twists and turns and the backdrop of the ocean going shipping trade is well portrayed, interesting and easy to grasp. Some of the technical work in the filming betrays the age of the series (early 1970's) but the colour and sound are excellent and the sets and costume design are high quality. Importantly, the character acting is excellent throughout. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Onedin Line, The - Series 1 - Part 1   July 8, 2004

I saw this series for the first time when it was originally broadcast on television back in the 1970s. The characters, situations and especially the haunting theme tune stayed in my head and I never forgot them. Periodically the series has been shown again on cable television but I never had the chance to watch it in sequence again. Looking at it now with grown-up eyes I can see where primitive production techniques tie studio acting in with old stock footage of storms at sea but this doesn't affect the power of the story at all.pPeter Gilmore has never to my knowledge starred in another memorable TV role after several Onedin Line series. Perhaps he became so identified in peoples' minds as James Onedin that nobody cast him in anything else - which is a shame because he is superb. All the cast are great in their roles and it would have been interesting if the DVD had included biographical information or interviews with past cast members. The DVD offers only the story and scene selection. An oportunity lost, although I appreciate the expense these extras would have cost the BBC after all this time.pOnly the first two parts of series one are available on DVD at the moment. Are there plans to release any more? They would be appreciated, and the suspence of the cliffhanger ending to volume 2 is cruel.
