4 out of 5 stars Is Lara Croft Italian?   July 20, 2005

Hello there. I'm Perfessor Mom Pressfour, with a few words about *Love is All There Is*, a romantic comedy released in 1996. It stars Lanie Kazan as Sadie, Paul Sorvino as Piero, Barbara Carrera as Maria, Joseph Bologna as Mike, Angelina Jolie as Gina, and Nathanial Marston as Rosario. My review is specific to the ILC DVD edition.pA website about Nathanial Marston reveals a little-known fact: *Love is All There Is* was filmed in 1994. But its release was delayed 2 years. That explains why the opening credits announce "Introducing Angelina Jolie" (02m:40s). Most Jolie fans think *Love is All There Is* was filmed in 1996. By '96 Ms Jolie had already appeared in several films including *Hackers* (1995), a splash hit among young people. So why do the credits to *Love is All There Is* claim to introduce her for the first time? It's because her role as Gina Malacicci was supposed to the first Jolie performance to play in cinemas (I'm not counting her brief appearance as a child in *Lookin' to Get Out*, filmed in 1980, released in '82). pBefore *Love is All There Is*, Ms Jolie had a part in *Cyborg II--The Glass Shadow*. That's said to be her first film appearance as an adult. But *Cyborg II* was released straight to video. It never made the movie houses. There's a story that when it came out, Jolie's brother James Haven Voight played the *Cyborg II* video for her. She ran to the toilet to vomit, it was that bad. In contrast, *Love is All There Is* is quite an enjoyable movie. pIt's too bad *Love is All There Is* collected dust on a studio shelf for a couple years before its release. If it came out in 1994, the year it was filmed, it would probably carry a lot more weight with Jolie fans now. Her Gina role is clearly the best work she did before *Hackers.* pGina is supposed to be 16 years old. Ms Jolie was possibly 18, not more than 19, when she played her. Since Gina's father is acted by Paul Sorvino, it might be asked why his real daughter Mira didn't get the Gina part. I don't know. But Mira Sorvino is a few years older than Angelina Jolie. She would not have been as convincing in the role of a teenager. pGina's mother Maria is played by Barbara Herrera. These two actresses (Jolie, Herrera) share somewhat similar facial features. Jolie is believable as Maria's daughter.pAngelina Jolie can be quite the chameleon. pIt's often noted that *Love is All There Is* is loosely based on Shakespeare's *Romeo and Juliet*. The operative word is "loosely." *Love is All There Is* resembles *Romeo and Juliet* about as much as I resemble Arnold Schwarzenegger. pAnyway, as a movie about two young lovers of 1990s Long Island whose families want nothing to do with one another, *Love is All There Is* makes for solid comedy entertainment. I'm surprised some reviewers here dissed it. Well, all I can do is advise you that when you look at this movie you should bring along some awareness of New York Italian-American culture, and some appreciation for ethnic humor. pI mean, it's side-splitting just the way the characters talk to one other. All you have to do to get a good laugh going is to sit, watch and listen--that is, as long as you know what it is you're watching and hearing. What's so funny is that there really are people in NYC who speak and act like this!
