4 out of 5 stars Gamera 2 Attack of the Reveiw   May 21, 2008
This was my first real monster movie and it was'nt what I expected (That doesn't mean it's bad). The plot slowed down the movie since you don't see Gamera till about 30 minutes into it and he doesn't fight till half way through. However, the fights between Gamera and the legion monster are the best parts; they're slow but for a classic monster movie they're good. Now, the plot may slow it down, but if you like scenes were the people talk after evey battle to develop characters or think up stagey then this is for YOU!!! br /And, in conlusion, I think this movie was good and the ending was also very climactic. br /MAT

4 out of 5 stars "BIGGER! BADDER! TURTLIER"   October 14, 2006

Which giant Japanese monster fan could resist a come-on like that, especially when they emanate from Gamera's mouth on the back of the dvd case? Not me, for sure.br /Actually, it isn't turtlier because Gamera isn't in it as much as you expect. On the other hand the puny humans, who usually seem to be there just to cut down on the more expensive scenes of monster mayhem, aren't too bad in this one and the bad monsters are quite cool. br /So, definitely recommended to fans of the genre.br /Surprisingly there's also a good batch of extras. Outtakes isn't what it seems, rather it's a collection of scenes redubbed with risque dialogue. Lake Texarcana Gamera is a mini version of the film as dubbed by rednecks and is very very funny. Add an unofficial extra star for these unexpected but welcome bonuses.

5 out of 5 stars Daiei show Toho how it should be done   January 27, 2004

The second of Shusuke Kaneko's Gamera trilogy from the 1990s, this film is still ahead of the current Toho produced Godzilla films despite its 1996 release.pPut simply, Gamera 2 has the kind of great plot, engaging characters and confident direction that Hollywood is lacking. Visually, the film is beautiful, switching between autumnal and winter scenes that ground the Gamera films in the real world. The visual effects are exciting and at times astonishing given the movies meagre budget.pThe finale carries an emotional punch will have you leaping out of your seat.pA great film, worthy of 5 stars. Hopefully, is sales prove good, ADV will release the sublime Gamera 3 to wrap things up - a six-star movie if ever there was one!pToho eat your heart out.

5 out of 5 stars Rebirth of Daikiaju Eiga   January 10, 2004

"Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion" marks the first Japanese monster movie to be released on DVD in the UK (in fact, the last Japanese kaiju release here was 6 years ago on VHS).pShusuke Kaneko's "Gamera" trilogy completly reinvisioned the popular view of Japanese monster movies, especially "Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris", which boasted better special effects and script writing than the American "Godzilla" (1998) on a budget about a tenth of the cost. The image of "cheesy men in rubber suits" has been fading for many years now, and it's not until now that the UK can see this themselves, thanks to ADV's brilliant quality DVD releases.p"Gamera 2" stands out from the other two entries in the trilogy, focusing more on traditional science fiction elements (as opposed to the spiritual/fantasy theme of the other two). Produced in 1996, the film boasts some brilliant effects work, and a grand final battle between Gamera; the ancient Earth's guardian, and the giant demon Legion.pShusuke Kaneko has made himself a big reputation in modern Japanese action films, having directed "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe" (1995), "Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion" (1996), "Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris" (1999), "Cross Fire" (2000), and the most critically acclaimed "Godzilla - Mothra - King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack" (2001).
