Amazon.co.uk Review There is not a single joke, sight-gag or one-liner in IMonty Python's Life of Brian/I that will not forever burn itself into the viewer's memory as being just as funny as it is possible to be, but--extraordinarily--almost every indestructibly hilarious scene also serves a dual purpose, making this one of the most consistently sustained film satires ever made. Like all great satire, the Pythons not only attack and vilify their targets (the bigotry and hypocrisy of organised religion and politics) supremely well, they also propose an alternative: be an individual, think for yourself, don't be led by others. "You've all got to work it out for yourselves", cries Brian in a key moment. "Yes, we've all got to work it our for ourselves", the crowd reply en masse. Two thousand years later, in a world still blighted by religious zealots, Brian's is still a lone voice crying in the wilderness. Aside from being a neat spoof on the Hollywood epic, it's also almost incidentally one of the most realistic on-screen depictions of the ancient world--instead of treating their characters as posturing historical stereotypes, the Pythons realised what no sword 'n' sandal epic ever has: that people are all the same, no matter what period of history they live in. People always have and always will bicker, lie, cheat, swear, conceal cowardice with bravado (like Reg, leader of the People's Front of Judea), abuse power (like Pontius Pilate), blindly follow the latest fads and giggle at silly things ("Biggus Dickus"). In the end, ILife of Brian/I teaches us that the only way for a despairing individual to cope in a world of idiocy and hypocrisy is to always look on the bright side of life. p BOn the DVD:/B ILife of Brian/I returns to Region 2 DVD in a decent widescreen anamorphic print with Dolby 5.1 sound--neither are exactly revelatory, but at least it's an improvement on the previous release, which was, shockingly, pan scan. The 50-minute BBC documentary, "The Pythons", was filmed mainly on location in 1979 and isn't especially remarkable or insightful (a new retrospective would have been appreciated). There are trailers for this movie, as well as IHoly Grail/I plus three other non-Python movies. There's no commentary track, sadly. --IMark Walker/I

Your starter for Ten, Archbishop....... December 18, 2008 Was there ever a film that created such a volume of gas? The Church never got the point: the Pythons were not tearing down the pillars of the church, they were creating quite possibly the funniest thing they ever did, and along the way blasting Christianity into the reality of the 21st century. You only have to look at the Characters list to start laughing - "Crucifee"; "Lead Singer Crucifee"; "Man Even Further Forward"; "Mr. Big Nose"; "Shoe Follower"......... "Shoe Follower"!!! So in fact, "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy !" And of course, they only spoke the truth: that's all he was. The Church took the bait, hook, line and sinker - Oh, dear! "Crucifixion? - Goo-ood." And, like Keaton, Milligan only has to look into the camera and we crack up. An inspired work. Inspired by God? - Well, now, there's a thought ..........br /

So disappointed August 8, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love Monty Python humour, but this film was completly ruined by the almost constant stream of swearing, could not finish the film
great film August 7, 2008 I own this dvd and i thought it was hilarious, this movie did make a lot of people unhappy. 'i still think this is a great film today. I wasn't interested in this film until my two friends brought it up in a film discussion, so i thought i should see it for myself so if you want to see this just watch it you wont be dissapointed.
'Im not the messiah!' July 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Life of Brian is brilliant, gut busting, wee yourself laughing sort of film. It followes Brian of Nazerith played by Graham Chapman who joins a group of people disloyal to the Romans, after graffiting over the Roman's property he is on the run, while hiding he ends up in front of people and is forced to preach causing him to be thought of as the messiah. The film is ledgendary for many scenes partically 'Always look on the bright side of life' but when you watch it you'll find every scene is a treat and extremly funny.br /
