4 out of 5 stars Magical AND it has Gielgud   October 8, 2004

This version of the story (and it's one of so many remakes) is a wonderful balance of humour and pathos. Let's not get too 'literary' over it - it's just an extremely good story turned into a highly enjoyable film full of quirky characters; both offbeat and slapstick humour; and a gloriuously Over The Top performance by magical Sir John - who obviously relished playing such a mischievous ghost. Other versions may be truer to the original story - but this one presses all the right buttons and leaves you looking forwards to the time when you can watch it again.

Although this tv film got panned at the time it gave me and my family hours and hours of entertainment for many years.pThe House of DeCanteville has been cursed for centuries and the family castle haunted by the murderous Sir Simon. When the remaining descendants (having all been driven out by his tomfoolery) hand over the reigns to their American relatives both the new family and the ghost get more than they are bargaining for.brThe nutty Brits combined with the pessimistic American newcomers is bound to be interesting, but throw in a grouchy old ghost and you have complete mayhem.pThe remake starring Patrick Stewart and Neve Campbell, although truer to the original novel lacked something - John Gielgud. The legendary actor brought beautiful English humour to his part of Sir Simon DeCanteville and the relationship between the grouchy ghost and American descendant Jennifer (a very young Alyssa Milano) shone through on the screen. I've been looking for this film for years and am so glad to have come across it again.
