This version of The Marriage of Figaro will make the opera available for the appreciation of the average person in the street. English is used throughout with spoken dialogue. pBoth the singing and dialogue are well articulated and one should have no difficulty in understanding what is being spoken or sung. pThe performance is excellent and well produced.pIn places it is a little vulgar, but then so was Motzart, and overall very funny. It belongs in the same category as the Whitehall farces but with the inclusion of some first class music.pIn general this is a version not to be missed by any one other than those who feel that the operatic medium should be kept out of reach of the average person.

What a pity. Le Nozze Di Figaro is one of, if not THE greatest opera in history,and the performance here lives up to everything you might hope for. Great singers, beautiful production, etc... Unfortunately the sound quality is simply terrible. It took a big effort from me to watch this thing from start to finish. The only excuse one might have for buying it is that you get to see a young Kiri Te Kanawa as the Countess, the role that made her an international super star. She looks absolutely beautiful and judging by what little we can hear from this tape, she was in fine voice too. The other singers do very well also, and if the quality of sound had been anything above the mediocre I wouldn't have hesitated to give it AT LEAST four stars. As it is, I would say that it's better to save yourselves a lot of frustration and keep your money in your pockets, or better still,spend it on another Le Nozze Di Figaro-video or DVD.

The purists will hate this version of the Marriage of Figaro, but the story is all there, the music, the singing voices are as magical as any seen on stage in it's native language. The hilarious dialogue in English brings this opera alive to the younger generation, despite some bad language and serious inuendo which I would think makes Mozart spin in his grave and makes with unsuitable to those easily offended. I found it a film to watch again again, very enjoyable

Excellent casting, singing and production and if you have hearing, a good buy. If you have poor hearing, relying on the subtitles you will find it difficult to read and follow what is going on.
