3 out of 5 stars By no means the best, but still good watching...   December 24, 2008
I very occasionally catch this on TV, and always smile at the casting. Its very hard to believe that George Chakiris, the star of West Side Story is playing a Norwegian. Even with his Naval uniform, he still looks like Bernardo! br /br /Not that his character is the only strange piece of casting. You get the distinct feeling that Bomber Command has gone out of its way to build a Mosquito squadron from all over the empire, as half a dozen pilots include an Australian and an Indian (even less convincingly played by Julian Sherrier).br /br /Of course, as the whole storyline is based on Frederick Smith's book, some liberties with reality are fine.br /br /Compared to Dambusters - based on fact, and with a stronger plotline - and Where Eagles Dare - written by Frederick Forsyth (and can't you just tell!) - this is an enjoyabled watch but probably not worth buying unless you want the Mosquitos in action.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent half of a classic double bill   November 28, 2007

I went to see this with my friend and his older brother when I was about 12 years old. The local RAF base had sponsored a double bill of this with 'Reach for the sky'. It was a brilliant night out, to see two brilliant films. In 'real life' I have little time for the armed forces, but in film this is unbeatable.br /br /I also remember swallowing a murray mint whole, during the film. Luckily it went down without me having to require medical assistance, but I still remember the sore throat.

I read the previous reviews but thought I would try it for myself.br /br /I have just watched it all the way through and thought it was absolutely awful.br /br /I wouldn't buy it and certainly would not watch it again.

5 out of 5 stars Suicide mission   September 5, 2006

Although the special effects are disappointing by todays standards, this is still a great film. It sticks closely to the book by Frederick E Smith and is worth watching. Its only a shame that the producers got an American, Cliff Robertson, to play the lead, but I suppose if it is to have any viewers in USA there has to be an American somewhere. Great action sequences and a great score.

3 out of 5 stars For Mosquito Lovers Everywhere   November 14, 2004

It's a pretty naff film (even for its era). The model and special effects were pretty poor - even then.pThe HUGE plus for warbird afficandos are the last three airworthy Mosquitos roaring across the screen. It was the last time - and now at time of writing (Nov 2004) there are no airworthy Mossies - so the film records their wooden wonder passing.pRon Goodwin's stirring "633 Squadron March" is a gem to go with the flying sequences.
