Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
This action-comedy from 1990 makes the critical mistake of trying to mix a potentially suspenseful plot with the kind of humour that Mel Gibson can only get away with in his ILethal Weapon/I movies. It doesn't work here because the movie's supposed to be a Hitchcockian thriller and Mel's wisecracking--not to mention some implausible plot twists and ridiculous chase scenes--makes it impossible to take any of this movie seriously. It works best as a lightweight vehicle for Gibson and Goldie Hawn, who bring their own established appeal to their roles as old lovers who are reunited under unexpectedly dangerous circumstances. After testifying against some drug-running killers, Mel's been safe under the protection of the FBI's witness relocation program, and Goldie coincidentally enters his life again just as the bad guys are hot on Mel's trail. They join up and go on the run from the villains and ... well, let's just say director John Badham doesn't have any big surprises up his sleeve. Goldie and Mel are enjoyable, as always, but you'd have to be their biggest fan to watch this movie more than once. --IJeff Shannon, Amazon.com/I

3 out of 5 stars Fairly Average Action Caper   May 15, 2007

THis film was released shortly after the super success of Lethal Weapon 2 and looking at the trailer with its action sequences, one would expect traces of Mel Gibson's 'Riggs' portrayal. Quite the opposite ! This is an all out and out comedy and the pairing of Gibson and Goldie Hawn works wonders. This is what saves this fairly predictable film. The dialogues are corny but then with such a pairing, it works fine. 'The climatic scene ruins the film and could have well been edited. Better still watch this 110 minute film and once you reach 100 minutes; press the eject button.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Early 90's Action-Adventure   May 22, 2006

Superstars Mel Gibson and the loveable Goldie Hawn star in this enjoyable, action-comedy. The plot is somewhat convoluted but the general story is that Rick (Gibson) is hiding under the FBI witness re-location program but he gets nervous when an old flame, Marianne (Hawn) recognises him. Before he can assume a new identity, the man he put in jail (David Carradine) is released and comes to pay his respects. Rick and Marianne find themselves reunited when they are thrown into a cross country, action packed adventure, avoiding gangsters, police and an amorous veterinarian, played by Joan Severance. There is nothing short of great chemistry between the two leading players, even if there roles are quite typical of roles they have both played in other films. Never the less this film holds many laughs and good points and the unforgetable climax in an elaborate zoo exhibit is where the film really scores best.br /br /br /

4 out of 5 stars First Rate Hawn and Gibson   September 24, 2003
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

To be short, this is a more or less standard chase movie. Gibson is a former witness who put the bad guy in jail. The latter is out to kill him, and Gibson goes on the run with Goldie Hawn. From there, all thoughts of commonplace films end. Hawn and Gibson are magnificant. This is a perfect example of a mediocre plot rescued by good acting. It also proves beyond a doubt that Goldie Hawn had (at the time) the most beautiful legs going. You pretty much know what is going to happen from the beginning, but watching these two do their thing is hugely enjoyable. Goldie Hawn is one of the most under rated of comic actresses. Also worth seeing is Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase in "Foul Play" Same comments re the plot, but great fun although not quite as good as "Bird on a Wire".

5 out of 5 stars Funny, clever and plenty of action.   December 8, 2000

It has to be said that I'm a bit of a Mel Gibson fan, so I may be slightly biased, but I love this film. It's all the best of Mel Gibsonh and Goldie Hawn rolled into one brilliant movie. It has the amazing action, the brilliant romance and the superb comic timing. One of the bast parts of this film is seeing all the different characters Gibson can play. One minute he's a mechanic, the next he's a camp hairdreeser. You can't lose. Goldie Hawn is also brilliant. Her comic timing is spot on and together they make a brilliant pair. They could lighten up any Hollywood script.
