Amazon.co.uk Review
Disney's 1994 animated feature, IThe Lion King/I, was a huge smash in cinemas and continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed stage production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is deposed by a jealous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking and the songs from Tim Rice and Elton John, accompanied by a colourful score, are more palatable than in many recent Disney features. --ITom Keogh/I p BOn the DVD:/B IThe Lion King Special Edition/I is a superb restoration: take a look at the serviceable but dull film clips incorporated in the plethora of extras and compare them to the vivid gorgeousness of the film presentation. This special edition also adds a 90-second song ("Morning Report") that originated in the lavish stage musical. To Disney's credit, the original theatrical version is also included, both restored and featuring two 5.1 soundtracks: Dolby Digital and a new Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix, which does sound brighter. As with the Disney Platinum line, everything is thrown into the discs, except an outsider's voice (the rah-rahs of Disney grow tiresome at times). The excellent commentary from the directors and producer, originally on the laser disc, is hidden under the audio set-up menu. p The second disc is organised by 20-minute-ish "journeys" tackling the elements of story, music and so on, including good background on the awkward Shakespearean origins at Disney where it was referred as "IBamlet/I". The most interesting journey follows the landmark stage production, and the kids should be transfixed by shots of the real African wildlife in the animal journey. Three deleted segments are real curios, including an opening lyric for "Hakuna Matata". Most set-top DVD games are usually pretty thin (DVD-ROM is where it's at), but the Safari game is an exception--the kids should love the roaring animals (in 5.1 Surround, no less). One serious demerit is the needless and complicated second navigation system that is listed by continent but just shows the same features reordered. I--Doug Thomas/I

2 out of 5 stars am i missing something here??   December 13, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

i've heard nothing but great things about this so i got a copy of the 2 disc version and sat down expecting to be entertained disney style!!!br /what a load of rubbish, first of all james earl jones has and always will be (unfortunetly for him) darth vader and i was just waiting for him to say to simba "i am your father" but its the story and the songs thats the biggest problem.the story has been seen 100 times before(i won't spoil it just in case you want to see the film) and for me just didn't work, the songs written by elton john are just poor they just don't fit the film, just think of classic disney songs/music used in disney films of the past dumbo, fantastia, snow white and of course the jungle book all great films where the songs fit perfectly in the lion king they are simply there for elton to sell a few million copies of the soundtrack.br /for me the only thing good here is timon pumbaa who are as funny as anything in any past disney film and save this from being as bad as the incredibles(simply awful).some people seem to love this film(watch nemo or the jungle book both much more fun) but my copy is back on ebay looking for a good home...any takers???

5 out of 5 stars Best Disney Film In My Opinion   July 18, 2008
The Lion King is my all time favourite disney film, i just love the story the music and the way it all comes together. I have watched this film countless times and still want to watch it again. The newer disney films are in comparison rubbish to the lion king its such a big hit,so gripping and i have looked in countless shops for it and to no luck. There are a million and one copies of 101 dalmations,Aladdin but no Lion King because no1 wants to part with it, its a Quality film that i will love forever.br /

5 out of 5 stars Review of the film only   July 8, 2008
as i dont have the dvd special edition, i will just review the fantastic film that is The Lion King.br /br /As others have said, it is the best disney film ever. And the only one that can make me cry. When Musafa dies, it is the saddest thing ever. Simba is a true hero and king. The names of the characters are brilliant. you truly want him to come back and claim his place on Pride Rock. And get revenge on his evil uncle scar. A true baddie!! and of course, you have to see this film again and again for the magic that is the duo Timone and Pumba. they are fantastic and so funny! i love them. i love this. thank you disney!

You would be a fool not to buy this. It is enjoyed by people of all ages, not just children. The songs are magical and the story is great. I would recommend it to anyone!
