Amazon.co.uk Review The largest lake in California becomes a symbol of a lost idyll in DJ Caruso's excellent Inoir/I-ish thriller IThe Salton Sea/I. Val Kilmer is superb as lowlife Danny Parker, or perhaps trumpeter Thomas Van Allen; a man so far over the edge in tragedy, duplicity and drugs he no longer knows or cares who he is. A warped revenge drama occupying similar territory to IMemento/I, IThe Salton Sea/I is not as ingenious as that instant classic, but is more elegantly stylised, boasting superb production design, cinematography and music, the latter by Thomas Newman. Along for the ride is Deborah Kara Unger, and those who remember her from IThe Game/I will do well to take Kilmer's narration to heart when he says nothing is as it seems. Distinguishing what could have been simply a good thriller are elements not just of humour, but of laugh-out-loud hilarity funnier than most recent comedies; indeed, IThe Salton Sea/I is the most striking fusion of laughter and darkness since the admittedly very different IAn American Werewolf in London/I (1981). In this respect, Vincent D'Onofrio delivers a side-splitting and audacious performance as drug baron Pooh Bear. Watch out for the rabid badger. p BOn the DVD:/B IThe Salton Sea/I is presented anamorphically enhanced at 1.77:1, with a flawless picture that captures the rich tones and extreme visual contrasts to perfection. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is crystal clear and deeply atmospheric. Extras are the theatrical trailer, plus features on the production design (eight minutes) and cast and crew (nine minutes). More intelligent than the expected Electronic Press Kit material, the running length means they are still fairly perfunctory. --IGary S Dalkin/I

The Best Film You Have Never Heard Of August 12, 2008 Val Kilmer was excellent in this ,if you loved him in Tombstone and loathed him in Top Gun,watch this.Yes its art house, yes its sleazy ,its also a grippingly good story, total entertainment.Goth is definately Val`s look!!
not you average revenge flick! October 1, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Val Kilmer turns in one one his better efforts here in this stylish film noir. He plays Danny Parker, a 'rat' trying to get revenge on those who murdered his wife. But in order to do that, he's got to help the killers first. The plot has been done plenty of times before, but here, theres more refreshing ideas rather than the step by step duplicate of some other film. Plus a great music score from Thomas Newman, this adds up to a very entertaining revenge thriller, which, although might not be to everyone's taste due to some strong violence and sadistic scenes, this film is nevertheless very good indeed. Its a shame that the DVD has so little extras.
Pure art, there should be more films like these August 19, 2003 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have to say I was very sceptical watching a film with Val Kilmer. I know he's a superb actor but ever since 'The Saint' every piece of work he has done has been bland and un-original. Then out of the blue a DVD showed up in my local rental shop and I thought i'd give it a look. This film is superb it has everything that hollywood blockbusters are missing; It had good characther depth an interesting and original storyline and some great twists. Vincent D'onofrio (probably spelt wrong) played a warped drug dealer and pulled it off with style. I also have no doubt that we will be seeing more of Mr Kilmer in Arthouse films, if you ask me he's found his calling. BUY IT!!!
