Let's be honest: this 1995 epic isn't nearly as bad as its negative publicity led us to expect. At the time, IWaterworld/I was the most expensive Hollywood production in history (it had a iTitanic/i-sized 200 million US dollars budget), and the film arrived in cinemas with so much controversy and negative gossip that it was an easy target for ridicule. The movie itself, a flawed but enjoyable post-apocalypse thriller, deserves better. iWaterworld/i stars Kevin Costner as the Mariner, a lone maverick with gills and webbed feet who navigates the endless seas of Earth after the complete melting of the polar ice caps. The Mariner has been caged like a criminal when he's freed by Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and enlisted to help her and a young girl (Tina Majorino) escape from the Smokers, a group of renegade terrorists led by Dennis Hopper in yet another memorably villainous role. It is too bad the predictable script isn't more intelligent, but as a companion piece to iThe Road Warrior/i, this seafaring stunt-fest is adequately impressive. i--Jeff Shannon/i

To quote Jim Carrey in Cable Guy " I don't know what all the fuss was about, I thought that movie rocked, it ruled!". He's not far wrong even if he was a head-case, sure people complained about the scientific liklihood and blah blah. Honestly, who gives a damn ? Kevin Costner fights pirates on jet-ski's in a post-apocalyptic future, it's a cinch that this isn't a Ken Loach film. As such, the stunts effects and set-pieces all are top notch. Downside is that Costner has little in the way of charisma in the lead role, he has a haggard look about him, a bitter disposition and, appropriately maybe for a fish-man, a mullet hairstlye which made me feel ill. Quite ill.. In fact it should lose a point just for that. No that's cruel- i'll stick with it. Seriously , it's better than you've been led to believe. Give it a go.

LIKE THE CURATES EGG, GOOD IN PARTS, A BIT LIKE CRAP FROM CHINA A BIT FAR FETCHED BUT DIFFERENT. NOT AS BAD AS SOME OF THE LATEST RELEASES WHICH ARE LIKE WATCHING PAINT DRY.THE YOUNG GIRL WAS EXCELLENT CONSIDERING HER AGE I THINK SHE HAS A GREAT FUTURE WHOEVER SHE IS.

I fell into a deep coma while watching this film from which I did not awake for five years. A similar thing happened while watching The Postman. (AKA, Waterworld On Dry Land)br /br /10 years of my life wasted! Thank you Kevin Costner!br /

First of all ignore what Sea Monkey "jojo2005" is saying below, as that is a load of wrong. The film may have done porrly at release but it is fair to say that anyone who apreciates a good film will enjoy this. IT has an originality about it that cant be beat, a good story, great acting and the characters are very creative. If you liked films such as LOTR or The Faculty give this a try.
