Amazon.co.uk Review A slick, smart vehicle for Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn, IHousesitter/I offers an acceptably daffy premise and enough inventive business to sustain it through to the, not unexpected, happy ending. Architect Martin builds a dream home for his childhood sweetheart (Dana Delaney) only to be rejected when he proposes marriage. After a one-night stand, Hawn--a daffy waitress with a gift for making up improbable but convincing lies--moves into Martin's house and tells his parents (Donald Moffatt, Julie Harris) and the whole community that she is his surprise new wife. When he sees how this impresses Delaney, Martin goes along with the charade, encouraging wilder and wilder fictions and doing his best to join in so that he can rush through to a divorce and move on to the woman he has always wanted. Hawn has to recruit a couple of winos to pose as her parents and impress Martin's boss into giving him a promotion, but we glimpse her real misery at his eventual intention to toss her out of the make-believe world she has created because her own real background is so grim. p Its sit-com hi-jinx are manic enough not to be strangled by an inevitable dip in to sentiment towards the end, and Hawn, who always has to work hard, is better matched against the apparently effortless Martin than in their subsequent pairing in IOut-of-Towners/I. Martin, often wasted in comparatively straight roles, has a few wild and crazy scenes as Hawn prompts him into joining her improvised fantasies. Director Frank Oz, a frequent Martin collaborator (IDirty Rotten Scoundrels/I, ILittle Shop of Horrors/I, IBowfinger/I), is the model of a proper, competent, professional craftsman when he sets out to put a comedy together--but the film misses streaks of lunacy or cruelty that might have made it funnier and more affecting. p BOn the DVD:/B The disc offers a pristine widescreen non-anamorphic transfer, letterboxed to 1.85:1. There are no extra features to speak of, just text-based production notes, cast and director bios, plus a trailer and an assortment of language and subtitle options. --IKim Newman/I

lying can be good !! July 12, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a film I love because a bad thing - lying - is depicted in such a humorous and positive way:Goldie Hawn lies her pants off at every opportunity and Steve Martin can't stand her fibbing, but when she shows him the advantages lying can bring to his life,he becomes a liar himself and ends up falling in love with Goldie. And so does the viewer.A very clever and well-written script that will hold your attention throughoutbr /97 minutes. The extras section has no filmed interviews with the stars but written information about them and their careers. There is a choice of five spoken languages:english, french, german, spanish and italian.
An all time favourite!!!! May 25, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Both actors Martin and Hawn are actors in their own right and can carry a comedy such as Roxanne and Father of the Bride(Martin) and Overboard and Bird on a wire(Hawn)br /The combination of the pair is fanastic and one that should go down in history. One of my all time favourite films, one that I can watch from beginning to end without having to forward bits. It makes me laugh every time and it is just such a wonderful film. Anyone who loves either actor will love this film.

I'd forgotten just how good this film is, not one of Steve Martin or Goldie Hawn's more well known movies, it's a lovely gentle, but still extremely funny light romantic comedy.pBoth Hawn and Martin excel in their roles and they work really well together. Hawn's kooky and loveable small con-artist is perfect against Martin's straight laced conservative architect and the strange double life they have to lead, due to their constant lies, makes for an entertaining story. They are ably supported by a great cast of character actors and the character combinations make for some great scenes.pNot a side-splitting laugh-fest by any means, but the comedy is subtle, light and still just as enjoyable.
not to be missed October 15, 2003 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is one of those rare movies that can be watched over and over without losing its appeal. Suitable for the whole family! - used to be my all time favourite movie - till 'as good as it gets' came along courtesy of the great Jack Nicholas - superb comes with another 5 star recommendation - happy viewing
