NOW PUT SOME ACTORS IN IT!!! December 21, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Freddy is balls to the wall legend, his spin off wishfully tries to live up to the films by occasionally casting up and coming actors like Lori Petty, Brad Pitt (not famous then) and a few others. Why this series had failed is more to do with the dire acting than the silly and occasionally OTT freaky tales...the acting is okay in some however. Tobe Hooper opens the series with a prequel, nothing we didnt already know and where the films and comic series from the late 80's depicted Freddy's killers as the parents of Nancy, Kincaid, Kristen, Joey and many others here we just cant feel for them the way we should as we dont really know them, bad actors. Freddy's Nightmares Tales from the crypt with Freddy opening and closing each episode with a great or weak joke or a sinister line as the cryptkeeper did. Some episodes are badly filmed as much as badly acted but there are quality episodes here, Its a miserable life is freaky with great cinamatography. Mick Garris directed a few too. Credit to Robert Englund for enduring the hours of make-up to appear very briefly in each episode its just a shame the quality wasnt consistent. The episode where Freddy hooks up with the woman who stood him up at the prom is class and funny, mainly there are approx 15 episodes of the two seasons that Freddy is integral to and these are good and cheesey its just unfortunate that the complete series isnt availble yet. This series has been in the ashes for a long time dripping with shame but it is Freddy and should be amongst the rest of the Krueger DVD's in your collection so buy it.
This is really, really bad. January 12, 2005 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
As a fan of the Nightmare on Elm Street films I was excited to see this offered for rental through Amazon and promptly ordered it. I was particularly looking forward to the episode dramatising the story of Freddy's trial and murder but it was a real let down. This was a great opportunity to show Robert Englund acting without the make-up and showing something of the character of Freddy before his death. Instead, and there must be a reason for this that I've missed, they hardly even show Robert Englund's face let alone his acting abilities. pIn terms of the story, I expected it to be slightly different to how it was recounted in the feature films due to the shortened format of the TV series but it is still very poor. There is no tension at all, no horror and it just looks like a piece of work that the script writers, producers and actors haven't put any effort in to at all. The formula they must have used was simple: Get Robert Englund, give him the make-up and the glove, and then film it.pThe other episodes don't even deserve a comment.pI am so grateful to Amazon that I could rent this otherwise I would have parted with hard cash to see it!
It's worth it for episode 1. August 23, 2003 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
Ok, the series was damp, the acting was to be desired the camera work was a tad dodgy at times. However Ep1 "No more Mr. Nice Guy" is quite terrific. pThis ep tells the story of how Freddy Krueger becomes the dream demon that he is. Although it does slightly differ from the story that original Nightmare films tell us, it is very interesting to view. pYou are able to witness Freddy's first dream victom, which for me as a hardcore fan was quite a treat. You also get to see the trial and find out what the technicallity is that sets Freddy free from being locked up.pI think for any Nightmare On Elm St / Freddy Krueger fans this Episode is great. The other episodes are very bad though, infact I wouldnt bother with any of the other episodes at all except the sequal to "No more Mr. Nice Guy" which entitled "Sister's Keeper".
Transfer from Video to DVD is CRAP! July 3, 2003 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I can't believe how horrible the transfer is. I have 3rd generation copy-of-a-copy-of-a-copy episodes on tape that looked crisper and clearer than what this disc presents. Horrible cases of pixilization throughout all 3 episodes.pUntil they decide to REALLY clean up, digitally remaster and release all 44 episodes in DVD boxed sets, everyone would be better off sticking with the VHS releases.
Shameful cash in and not in a good way. June 11, 2003 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
This series was and still is awful. The acting is diabolical throughout. The worst thing, however, is the wierd editing. Each episode starts off as one story and then after half an hour goes off into something completely else. It's madness. On this DVD you get the first eposide which stars Freddy in a major role. It's just about okay and tells you the story of the parents of Elm St. burning him. It's watchable and vaguely interesting. The rest of the episodes however are rubbish. Minimal Freddy, playing a sort of MC of the episodes. The last epiosode stars a young Lorri Petty (Tank Girl). For Freddy fanatics only. If I were you i'd wait for some of the better 80's horror series to unearth themselves.
