Amazon.co.uk Review
II Spy/I tried and failed to be Eddie Murphy's comeback after IThe Adventures of Pluto Nash/I. As with his previous turkey, Murphy's the least of this movie's problems; his spitfire delivery begs for better plotting and dialogue, and his teaming with Owen Wilson had even more promise than Wilson's IShanghai/I comedies with Jackie Chan. But this unfunny hash--bearing no resemblance to the 1960s Bill Cosby/Robert Culp TV series that inspired it--undermines Murphy and Wilson at every turn, stranding them in scenes that play well in isolation but never form a coherent action-comedy whole. It's not that director Betty Thomas is incapable; she just seems uninterested, going through the motions while Eddie, Owen and Famke Janssen play spy games in Budapest, chasing after a villain (Malcolm McDowell, wasted again) who's stolen a sleek, invisibility-cloaked jet bomber called the Switchblade. Explosions, shoot-outs, double-crosses... ignore it all, and find what pleasure you can in Eddie and Owen's aimless banter. --IJeff Shannon/I

3 out of 5 stars NOTHING NEW BUT FUNNY   August 16, 2007
When a top secret camouflaged plane is stolen and hidden, secret agency BNS needs to get an agent into Hungary to uncover and prevent the sale of the weapon. Agent Alex Scott is selected to go undercover with civilian boxer Kelly Robinson and use his upcoming fight to gain access. However Kelly is less co-operative than first hoped and the mission risks being compromised. Can they stay out of trouble long enough to stop the sale?br /br /Take a little bit of Shanghai Noon, a little bit of Rush Hour, remove the oriental spice from the stew et viola! - you've got I Spy! By mixing the essence of Jackie Chan's sidekicks from both these films and putting the resultant stew into a comedy spy movie you have this enjoyable if unspectacular film. Wilson does his usual stuff but is still effortlessly funny, Murphy does his best Chris Tucker impression and does a good job playing a little dumb and is funny as well.br /br /The plot sees them doing, well, it doesn't really matter what they're doing, just that Wilson is Wilson and Murphy is playing up to good effect! The plot just about provides enough material to keep the film going, but the odd moment where the comedy banter quietens down, the weaknesses of the plot are immediately laid bare. This is not to say it isn't good enough for this type of film, but just that at times it is all very slight and a bit thin. The comedy is more based on banter than anything else, so if you like the two aforementioned Chan movies then this should be enjoyable as the humour is of the same vein.br /br /The support cast are all pretty average. Janssen does an OK job looking pretty but Malcolm McDowell just shows his face to no great effect. The funniest cameo is Gary Cole who plays an Irish spy playing a Cuban - he is just so unexpected in his actions that I had to be amused (of course he is helped by Wilson'' reactions to his character).br /br /Overall this was kinda overlooked at the UK box office and I think it was because it was very slight and flimsy. However for gentle laughs based on good banter rather than set up jokes, this is a surprisingly fun comedy despite not sticking in your mind for longer than 15 minutes after you watch it.

2 out of 5 stars Unless your thinking of visiting Budapest, this is not worth the time   July 18, 2006

Another pretty lame sidekick movie from two actors who are normally very good. The problem is that Owen Wilson does Owen Wilson very well and Eddie Murphy does Eddie Murphy just as well, but all with very few actual jokes. Interesting to see it filmed on location in Budapest as, at the time of writing this review, I had just visited the city and was pleased to see many of the sights I had visited just weeks before. Other than this the excitement, which should be top draw for a spy movie (even a spoof one), never really appeared and both script and plot are thin and poor. Wilson and Murphy do well playing themselves with very little to work with but I doubt they'll be listing it as one of their career best. If you want spoof espionage stick to Austin Powers.

Oh no! I hear you say ? not another James Bond spoof. Well ? not quite a spoof the film claims to hold its own ground but you have every reason to be skeptical. Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson play mismatched partners who are assigned to uncover an operation that could cause detriment to the world (where have I heard that before). Both actors are in familiar territory, clearly comfortable in their roles. The problem with the film is that the plot is wafer thin and there?s no character development; especially Malcolm McDowell who has a passive role, this is laughable considering he is the chief villain. The action is predictable and the visual and sound effects are second rate giving it a no thrill factor. Murphy and Owen have played these roles to better effect in other films e.g. Shanghai Noon and 48 hours.pIf you don?t have anything to do and don?t want to waste any of them brain cells; then rent this film, as least the gags will keep you happy for the time being. Look out for the scene where Murphy tries to match-make for Owen in his unorthodox style which is hilarious, but overall the film can be easily dismissed as commercial fluff.

2 out of 5 stars Undercover humour   October 23, 2003

.brThere are a few good things going for this film, but not enough to make it worth watching twice. It's a spy film, with the jokes so undercover, you can't see them.brOwen Wilson, plays an insecure secret agent looking for a stolen hi-tech fighter plane with a cloaking device and has to put up with partnering on the mission a brash, bragging, boisterous boxing star with an ego so large it needs an entourage to hold it up. If you hadn't guessed, this is played by Eddie Murphy.brMr. Murphy is the downfall of this film. Having realised he can't play any role other than Eddie Murphy, the film has to fit around Eddie Murphy. His witless banter is too dated and only makes you grin now and again throughout the whole film.brThe whole idea of comedy duos is that you get an unlikely pairing that somehow gel and makes you laugh. Not this pair. Owen Wilson could have done this film better on his own, but instead is wasted in it. Will Smith would have been a better partner.brDon't think I didn't find it amusing in places, because I did - there are some funny scenes. But on the whole, the film offers little with every set piece having been done before.brFamke Janssen is quite tasty in it but is wasted as is the baddie played by Malcolm McDowell who was under-hamming.pIf you're bored and this is the only film available then watch it. But if you have a choice, get one of the Shanghai films, a MIB film or any other buddy movie.

5 out of 5 stars Amazon review has it all wrong!   July 21, 2003

pThis is one of the best films I have seen all year and by far one of the best comedy action films of this type I have ever seen.pThe film was funny, witty and some of the acting by Owen Wilson and Eddie Murphy was exceptional. If you are fans of either of the two main actors here then trust me...you will enjoy this film.pAn underated gem of a film and one I heartily recommend.
