Amazon.co.uk Review Even viewers who consider themselves beyond their teen-angst years might find IDawson's Creek/I compelling. In the first series we are introduced to Dawson (James Van Der Beek) and Joey (Katie Holmes), who for years have watched movies and slept in the same bed; but they find that as they enter high school their relationship will inevitably change. That becomes especially clear when Dawson is immediately attracted to Capeside's sexy new arrival, Jen (Michelle Williams). Meanwhile, their friend Pacey (Joshua Jackson) pursues an unachievable love object. p Creator Kevin Williamson based IDawson's Creek/I on his own youth, and even though the characters may not really look or sound 15 years old, the Dawson-Joey-Jen interplay--especially embodied by the sad-eyed and cynical (but still adorable) Joey and the smart but emotionally inept Dawson--gives the show its heart. And just like Williamson's fresh take on the teen-horror genre, IScream/I, IDawson's Creek/I has a winking self-awareness, for example when Dawson says they're having a "I90210/I moment" or explains that they use big words because they watch too many movies. Highlights of the first series include Dawson's discovery that his perfect home life may not be so perfect, an unwelcome reminder of Jen's past, the IBreakfast Club/I takeoff "Detention", the IScream/I takeoff "The Scare", a beauty contest in which two unlikely competitors square off, and the heart-rending finale. --IDavid Horiuchi/I

The first and best season of Dawson's Creek! May 2, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Created by Kevin Williamson, the writer of Scream and I know what you did last summer comes this one of a kind teenage series. Except it's not just for teenagers! It's for anyone who loves witty, romantic, heart-breaking and surreal television. If you enjoy references to other TV shows and movies (as was the trend at the time) you'll love this first series. It seems normal now to mention popular culture in almost every TV show but at the time it was groundbreaking stuff! This is the best season, series one and two are superb, before the series went dowhill and turned into just another soap opera! It was always worth watching during it's six years on the air, but once Williamson left it was a shadow of it's former self. This season introduces us to film-maker Dawson (Van Der Beek) "Speilberg shot on an 8mm when he was 15" Tom-boy, soul mate and potential love interest for Dawson, Joey Potter (Katie Holmes), city girl Jen Lyndley (Michelle Williams) and misunderstood loner Pacey (A scene stealing Joshua Jackson!) This first series has many great story-lines including Pacey sleeping with his teacher, a love triangle involving Dawson, Jen and Joey, Jen learning to live with her Grandma's religion, her Grandad's death and a really great parody of the movie Scream. br /br /The four episodes that you must own are...br /br /The Pilot br /Hurricanebr /Detention (take off of the Breakfast club)br /The Scare (take off of Scream)br /br /Two commentary's from Williamson complete the package. As a writer myself I'm intrigued to listen to them and catch up... with the gorgeous Kate Holmes!br /
The original DC and one of the best! February 7, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this season. It's a real trip down memory lane for me. I had just started college when DC began so I was close in age to the characters and I could really relate to how they felt. I think Joey's feelings for Dawson are portrayed really well. Joey has always been one of the most compelling characters in this series for me and I was delighted to see her end up with Dawson at the end of this series (back in the day when Dawson was still a credible character that is!) Unlike in subsequent seasons, I think ALL the actors put a really good performance in here. brThere's no denying it's a great storyline- 3 friends growing up in a small town when in steps this wild child from New York to rock their world! Pacey doesnt really get the chance to shine as much here as in later seasons, which is a shame. brI think this season is essential to anyone who got into DC later on, as this season really lays the foundations for the whole Dawson- Joey- Pacey thing that comes later.brEven if you werent a fan of later seasons of DC I think you would like this- it's much more light hearted than later seasons and has some cracking episodes, especially that one that takes off "The Breakfast Club"brI'd definitely reccommend it!
Dawson's Creek: One of the best teen dramas! July 5, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
First of all, I've only watched this First Season, so I cannot compare it to the following seasons. One of the many reasons I love Dawson's Creek, is that this show is much more realistic than other shows, such as Beverly Hills 90210. The characters are not rich kids who just happens to experience everything there is to experience in this world. These are middleclass teenagers living in a small town. Another important reason is that this show sympathizes with the underdog. Of course, Dawson's Creek is a commercial, mainstream show but these teenagers are not the cheerleaders and the jocks. These teenagers are the losers, the geeks, the underachievers! In my opinion, this show takes a lot of risks. The first episode ends with Dawson (James Van Der Beek) confessing to his best friend, tomboy Joey (Katie Holmes) when and where he prefers to walk his dog! To me other highlights include the Tamara-Pacey (Joshua Jackson) affair; it's one of the hottest on-screen relationships! To newcomers the show is, of course, exciting and fresh with all these new characters and situations - in the beginning, the show focuses on these kids' transcendence into adolescence and it's all really innocent and blooming. Gradually, the show becomes more serious and it becomes apparent that the Dawson-Joey relationship is developping and that they can never go back to being "just best friends". Especially the two last episodes, "Beauty Contest" and "Decisions" are really exciting; in "Beauty Contest" Dawson finally realizes what Joey means to him, and "Decisions" is probably the episode with the highest scale of action. SO many things happen in this episode; Joey visits her imprisoned father, which makes for the most tear-jerking moment of the whole season. And Dawson and Joey's kiss is really intense! All the actors and actresses are really great - of course, it's individual who you like best; I prefer Joey and Pacey. Katie Holmes is so convincing and I believe Pacey's character is highly underrated - he brings a lot of humour and excitement to the show. But not only that, he and Joey are the real underdogs of the show, with their dysfunctional families! They both possess a sarcastic sense of humour which they often use to disguise how they really feel... The humour is also one of the show's strenghs. It's really clever - provided by all the characters dialogue, which, admittedly, is a bit unrealistic, but all the better for the show - and often risky and biting! All in all - Dawson's Creek is a MAGICAL show. It is SO engaging and clever and witfull! It's a MUST!
Dawson's Creek, the best yet May 25, 2004 This is the best series and the release of it on DVD has finally happened. It's set at the stages when the Capeside kids realise that they're growing up! It's just the four, Dawson, Joey, Pacey and Jen. It gives a great insight into the four main characters throughout the series and the goings on in the Creek which makes a rather interssting watch. Gradually other characters are introduced throughout the years, and thats why this is the best as it's gripping from the start.
At last, the DVD is here February 17, 2004 After waiting for a full series to be brought out on video in the UK for many years, I was so excited to find that it had been released on DVD. Even better. And I wasnt disappointed. It was as great as I remember it cant help watching them over. Cant wait for series 2!!!!!!!! Any die hard fan will not be able to resist
