4 out of 5 stars A ride down memory lane   June 3, 2004

I fell in love with the character Paul Craddock in a Horsemand riding by when it was first shown on T.V back in the 1970s (probably helped by Nigel Havers playing the character!) Since then I have read and re-read R F Delderfield's trilogy at various times of my life and have enjoyed it each time.pPaul Craddock injured out of the Boar war, settles in the South West corner of England to become a Squire to a neglected valley of an assortment of Edwardian characters. The Squires in the past had not bothered with their tenants, but Paul sees them as his family and soon we care for these people as much as he does.pSo when I discovered that the BBC had brought this 1970s television series out on video I was excited to watch it, but also apprehensive in case it didn't live up to my memories of the programme and whether it was true to the book. Whilst watching the first episode I was aware how much we have moved on when it comes to watching costume drama. The story was slow and the acting seemed a bit on the amateur side. HOWEVER, the following episodes soon picked up and were a joy to watch. The story line soon griped me again. The book was condensed well into these 50 minute episodes.pThe experience of viewing a 1970s BBC series was not a disappointment, in fact it was like watching a favourite old black white film, and to watch a young Nigel Havers brought an extra charm to this video.
