Boring August 16, 2008 I bought this DVD on the strength of previous reviews. It is humourless, ponderous and without wit. Drag queens who never get out of drag are not funny; neither is the plot.
BUY IT NOW!!!! June 25, 2007 My absolute favourite film of all time, it always makes me smile no matter what and i have been known to put it straight back on as soon as it rewound on more than one occassion! Don't take it too seriously just sit back and enjoy the costumes, the comedy and the feel good factor. What more could you want in a film than 3 drags queens getting stranded whilst travelling across America and forever changing small town minds? It's just so American its hilarious but heart warming at the same time. I cannot describe how much i love this film, it suits all ages and moods and i would have given it 6 stars if possible!
Mary Poppins with muscles! April 10, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Who would ever have thought that Patrick Swaze would make such a perfect (if muscular!) Mary Poppins!br /br /This film is not quite as good as Priscilla Queen of the Desert, which also deserves 5 stars, but it's still a fun romp in its own right. br /br /A film doesn't have to be depressing, angst-ridden or "worthy" to be worth seeing. This film makes my family care about the characters and laugh their socks off. It leaves us all feeling the better for having seen it. Last night, my 12 year old son punched the air and shouted "Yes!" as Mr Swaze sorted out an abusive husband. It works for a wide audience.br /br /It is, of course, also an indisputable truth that Julie Newmar is the greatest ever Catwoman...br /br /Why not see it for yourself?
To Wongs Dont Make It Right !? And Thanks for Nothing ! March 23, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Mmm this film actually is a grower - if you watch it a 2nd time, the characters become more likable and their little idiosynchrasies are more amusing (there IS the problem that they are quite 'American' in their ways - and you almost have to strain to catch some of the put downs and 'ad libs' - then decide that as a non-American you are never gonna be 'in' on the joke !).br /br /Despite this, Chi-Chi (John L.) is by far the most watchable thing in the film and is a 'natural' woman. Chi-Chi steals all the best scenes (she has 'more legs than a bucket of chicken' afterall !)- but I guess the film is ultimately about a 'Little Latin Boy in Drag' graduating into a fully-fledged 'Drag Queen' with the help of characters played by Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes (also in Drag) - with a Road Trip ( a la Priscilla Queen of The Desert ) thrown in for good measure.br /br /It has become a little fave now of mine - the 4 wonderful 'Steps To Becoming A Drag Queen' can be applied to anyone and I would say : OK SO IT'S NOT AS GOOD AS PRISCILLA - GET OVER IT ! then enjoy the film for the lighthearted well-meaning camp comedy that it is !br /br /The only thing that continues to puzzle me though is : when Vida(Swayze) tries to explain exactly what the difference is between a Transexual, Transvestite and Drag Queen. It leaves me to question why they choose - as self confessed Queens - to wear ALL the paraphenalia ALL THE TIME and WHEREVER THEY ARE (which is what a tranny would do ) But hey lets not split wig hairs ! Just enjoy !!
utter drivel..... November 13, 2006 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
A complete waste of space........this film has no heart or star quality whatsoever - the storyline is disjointed and pretty pointless, the vain attempts at sensitivity fall flat and with the exception of John Leguizamo (who is about the only good thing in this celluloid nightmare) the lead characters played by Messrs. Swayze and Snipes are embarrasingly over the top - this is a mess of a film which is blatantly trying to emulate the humor and emotion of "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" - i had so many people say I would like this because i loved "Priscilla" - how wrong they were......the whole film has an incomplete feel to it and I found myself not caring a bit aboout the characters.......Chris Penn as a bigoted cop seemed to near the knuckle for me (almost as though he wasnt acting at all in his venomous hatred of the drag queen and the implied but seriously underplayed homosexual overtones/feelings he may/may not have which were displayed in the bar scene with him in)br /br /Crap. Dont waste your money.......
