IField of Dreams/I is, in the words of its makers, a baseball film that "isn't about baseball". Rather, it's a magical film that works its spell on all but the most hard-boiled of viewers, an altogether superior slice of apple-pie sentimentality. Kevin Costner plays a young Iowa farmer who finds himself pestered by a whispering voice urging him, "If you build it, he will come". With the consent of an uncharacteristically supportive Hollywood wife (Amy Madigan) he sets about building a baseball diamond in the middle of his land. This action invites the prospect of bankruptcy--however, it also invites the spirit of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, a baseball superstar disgraced following his role in the 1919 World Series scandal. The supernatural voices continue to urge Costner to "go the distance"--and he seeks out reclusive writer Thomas Mann (James Earl Jones) and "Doc" Graham (Burt Lancaster), impelled by purposes he is as yet unable to divine. IField of Dreams/I works because it touches so endearingly on themes of redemption, inner peace and the possibility of second chances--the "dreams" which elude most of us. It also cites baseball as an idyllic metaphor for all that is decent and constant about America. Costner gives immense plausibility to an utterly, deliberately implausible scenario.p BOn the DVD:/B Presented in anamorphic 1.78:1, the vivid, almost unnaturally natural Iowa colours are depicted to vivid effect (much of the diamond grass had to be painted green when it died). Generous extras include a making-of feature, an interview with WP Kinsella, author of the novel on which the book is based, and Costner. ...although I loaned the film to a colleague at work who could not see the point of the film. I kinda thought that was partly the essence of it. br /br /I've since read the book too and have to say that I prefer the film although the novel is very well written but there are a few differences between the two.br /br /Well acted, well shot and it is the stuff of dreams. If you can't see the point you won't see the game...

Every now and then you find a film that just pushes all your buttons, it really speaks to you, no not "the voice", but to your heart. I am not ashamed to say that I cannot watch this film without crying, and I must have seen it at least twice a year, for a number of years now. It always gets me.br /br /A father son relationship that fell apart leaving regrets that could never be resolved, the beauty of this film is that it plays on a common problem that many men have with their fathers, and gives us all the chance to make a difference. I for one formed a much better relationship with my own father after watching the film, so you could say it has changed my life, though I hate that phrase it sounds so trite, but this film prompted me to make a choice before it was too late and for that I will always be grateful. That reason alone ensures it will always get top marks from me.

FIELD OF DREAMS is a film about a man who pursues a big dream against heavy odds. In the process he serves as a catalyst for some remarkable events. The film is guaranteed to leave the viewer feeling good about life. It is adapted from a novel about Shoeless Joe Jackson by W.P. Kinsella.br /br /Kevin Costner stars as the man who has the dream and the strong supporting cast includes Amy Madigan, Gaby Hoffman, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster and Timothy Busfield. James Earl Jones gives a particularly memorable performance as a famous writer from the 1960's.br /br /The movie was nominated for Oscars for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Original Score in 1989. The film's director Phil Alden Robinson also directed THE SUM OF ALL FEARS.

For years my dad kept telling me to watch this film, and for years I ignored him. Foolishly. I bought this DVD about a year ago and have lost count of the amount of times I have watched it. It is, in my opinion, the best sports film I have ever seen (and I love sports films!) br /br /Whilst the soul of the film is about dreams and always believing in yourself no matter how hard it is, for me the real strength lies in the tenderness with which it addresses not just baseball, but sport as a whole. The simply stunning Terrance Mann (James Earl Jones) speech about baseball near the end of the film, for me sums up what sport is all about. I am only a small fan of baseball and had no idea about it when originally watching the film but am a huge football fan, unfortunatly being an avid Wolves supporter! Yet although the speech talked about baseball, the meaning behind it, the spirit of what the game encompasses is true for all sports, football especially. Being a wolves fan has been passed down through the generations of my family (all being wolverhampton born) and as the speech says, its the one thing that has stuck through the ages, the one thing that unites us. I am 19 and will never for the rest of my life forget the magical day we beat United in the premiership, and this speech recalls the importance of sport in our hearts and in our memories from when we were young. It is the way sport is addressed in this film, that makes it just amazing. br /br /PLus as an earlier reviewer rightly said, if you are not touched by the last 15 minutes of the film, you have no soul. The line which always gets me being "No Ray, it was you" *sniff* I promise you this will be the one of the best DVD purchases you will ever make. A brilliant film, which will be around for years to come.
The power of dreams makes a compelling film...for men August 9, 2006

I'm no baseball afficianado, nor an American, but I loved both 'Shoeless Joe' ( the book on which this film is based) and this film, released some years after the book.br /br /It's a fable about the power of dreams, and the need to listen to your 'inner voice'. It's about a father/son relationship, and its a sports film for those with a spirit for life. And it is one of the best, a real 'feel good' film in which Costner excels. A real classic.br /br /What's more the cinematography and soundtrack are outstanding, and despite the fact it didn't win the academy's Best Picture Award in 1990 ( losing out to 'Driving Miss Daisy' can you believe?) , it's one of my all time top 10 films.
