Amazon.co.uk Review A broad science fiction thriller in a classic vein, IEquilibrium/I takes a respectable stab at a IFahrenheit 451/I-like cautionary fable. The story finds Earth's post-World War III humankind in a state of severe emotional repression; if no-one feels anything, no-one will be inspired by dark passions to attack their neighbours. Writer-director Kurt Wimmer's monochromatic, IMetropolis/I-influenced cityscape provides an excellent backdrop to the heavy-handed mission of John Preston (Christian Bale), a top cop who busts "sense offenders" and crushes sentimental, sensual, and artistic relics from a bygone era. Predictably, Preston becomes intrigued by his victims and that which they die to cherish; he stops taking his mandatory, mood-flattening drug and is even aroused by a doomed prisoner (Emily Watson). Wimmer's wrongheaded martial arts/duelling guns motif is sheer silliness (a battle over a puppy doesn't help), but IEquilibrium/I should be seen for Bale's moving performance as a man shocked back to human feeling. --ITom Keogh/I

More V for Vendetta than a Matrix December 6, 2008 This film cannot be compared to Matrix as they are very different in many ways. The main difference in my mind is, without wanting to give away the ending, how the future horizon is dealt with. In the Matrix you are left with the feeling that despite all that was attempted the future could be nothing but Matrix controlled. Equilibrium was different and left you with a much better taste, there was just as in 'V for Vendetta' the prospect that things might get better when people were given the opportunuity to think for themselves.
Total unmitigated nonsense December 3, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is easily one of the most awful films ever. The plot is a po faced rip off of 1984, with almost no attempt made to explore any of the issues leading up to the surveilance society shown. The styling is obviously a cheapo take on the matrix, look at the fight scenes, long black coats, and the man who can out-ham keanu in the lead role. Lots of pouting and confused expressions, think the "Joey Trebbiani" school of acting.br /br /The fight scenes are so stupid, at one point, surrounded by the enemy, mr bale decides to pistol whip his enemies to death. The inner humanity which tries to reawaken him is spawned by a puppy, and a room full of decoration so awful you immediately switch sides and start cheering for the super state, if only for their nice clean lines. Apart from that, the ending is an anticlimax, the sets all look cheap and, oh yeah, it's got sean bean in it, surely the sign of a B movie if ever there was one.br /br /Total waste of an evening, watch it for a laugh if you must.
Excellent value for money October 23, 2008 Always wanted to buy this but had second thoughts about the price, bought this along with The Prestige and Equilibrium as part of the 3 for 10 offer.br /Speedy delivery and great value for money!
1984 with a happy ending October 12, 2008 1984 was a fascinating story, but it was so depressing. Equilibrium is 1984 but for the new century. The fight scenes, all but the last one anyway, were awesome. It was cool the way everyones emotions were hidden, but you could see them slipping out, even when they were taking their emotion-suppressing medication.
ONE OF THE BEST FILMS I HAVE EVER SEEN... October 3, 2008 ...and proof that Christian Bale can play ANY role. The story copys the film "Fahrenheit 451". Excellent visual style and an excellent cast make this one a whole lot better than the "original". The finale will leave you stunned with an open mouth.
