Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Jittery camera moves and a grey-blue palette make it clear that Narc is a gritty police drama in the tradition of The French Connection and Serpico. Jason Patric plays Nick Tellis, a former undercover cop with an accidental death on his conscience, which may be why he's agreed to partner with Henry Oak (Ray Liotta), a lieutenant determined to track down the killers of his former partner. This could all be rote, but the grit sticks: writer-director Joe Carnahan takes a huge leap forward from his Tarentino-wannabe first film, Blood, Guts, Bullets & Octane. The entire cast is excellent; Patric and Liotta give rich, textured performances that make their respective obsessions vivid and sad. Narc could use more of the dark humour that occasionally bursts out, but the movie's drive and energy make it more than a bleak tale of good intentions gone bad. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars A let down.   March 6, 2008

This film tried to be over elaborate and clever. It failed on the second point. I can imagine this film drew its influence from the likes of the usual suspects, but the ending failed miserably. It was terrible and rendered all the previous scenes pointless. Why was the guy looking for revenge? He took the drugs, and he... well you'll see (or maybe not if you take my advice).
The family scene were cringe worthy, horrible to watch. I hated this film. Pointless.

1 out of 5 stars Awful   January 31, 2007

Why oh why oh why did this get made this way. Having read so many reviews about how great a film this was I waited with great anticipation for its delivery. How let down I was. A pedestrian performance from the usually outstanding Ray Liotta was a huge let down as was the bizarre and soulless story. Whilst you understand why and who are doing what it basically becomes a film that takes shortcuts to its end scences. Set in a world where Narcotic officers have to go deep undercover to get results one of the rookies involved in this sort of operation is shot. Liotta plays the dead cops hot headed partner. Intent on revenge he plays the standard 'cop who will stop at nothing' routine and it hurts to watch. It has been done before. I would not have minded this time around if it had been of a good quality. I could go on but that would force me to recall watching this tepid affair. It could have been better. It should have been better. Nevertheless as it stands I find it awful and I can't pretend otherwise. Many I'm sure will disagree but my mind won't be changed. If you do get this you've been warned!

5 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favour: watch this movie   July 13, 2005

I am a big fan of Ray Liotta, and found Jason Patric giving an honourable performance in Sleepers. I missed the big screen release and so purchased this film on dvd, not to sure it would be worth the money i paid for it... And i was wrong. I watched Narc twice, and "enjoyed" it even more the second time. The cast performance is simply superb, and the story gripping from start to finish, and you just feel compelled to watch the progression of the investigation led by these two cops brought together for all sorts of wrong reasons until its bitter and disturbing end... Put simply, easily one of the top 5 best cop movie ever made...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, edge of your seat action thriller!   June 16, 2005

This film has a very powerful gripping start. The rest of the film is just as good. This is a must see as i beleive this is one of the all time best films. Its very much an action packed thriller, based on the life of a narcotics officer with the things he has undergo whilst undercover but the whole film has a sub-plot with a great twist in the end.

5 out of 5 stars Art House cop movie   February 15, 2005

Set in bleak Detroit this film has all the elements of a genuine Greek tragedy and is more art house than cop movie. It is not your run of the mill entertainment. My only criticism - and this is one which could be levelled at substantial parts of US culture from the early westerns to the film in queston - is the fact that female characters are relegated to the peripherary.

If you like Serpico, NYPD Blue and Mystic River - this one is for you.
