Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
IUrban Gothic/I is an interesting and original horror short story anthology format, uniting standard horror material with contemporary urban London settings. Writer Tom De Ville has a good ear for streetwise chatter and a reasonably acute sense of class and ethnic difference; his pieces that are essentially character-driven tend to be more successful than those that depend rather more on sensation and plot device. The London locations and young cast combine to make something surprisingly creepy. p Highlights include the opening episode, "Deadmeat", in which a group of sensation-seeking young people, on the run from drug dealers and sexually rapacious employers, find a corpse with a look of horror on its face and decide to experiment with necromancy. In the fly-on-the wall documentary parody "Vampirology" a film crew follows a vampire on his nightly round of drinks with yuppie friends, before devouring a lost tourist. Keith-Lee Castle's portrait of a lost soul is remarkable, and the guest appearance of Ingrid Pitt, every vampire's favourite starlet, is hilarious. --IRoz Kaveney/I

2 out of 5 stars Horror for teenage boy MTV fans.   November 6, 2007
A medley of horror stories of differing quality. Some interesting ideas, others cliched beyond belief, and some just downright laughable. With a few honourable exceptions - mainly the more veteran actors and Keith Lee-Castle - the acting is poor to acceptable. Chucking very fast pictures at the viewer with thumping loud music on the credits, piling on the gore and including as much sex/nudity as they can get away with, does not a horror film make. Still, young guys who think they're cool will love it.br /No wonder the series was cancelled.

3 out of 5 stars average but satisfying...   April 14, 2004

Hiya, I bought this as I am a fan of horror. As a whole it is a weak series, with some very mediochre acting and some poor production values (ie bad lighting). Some plots are just played for laughs and not my taste; 'be movie' and 'pineapple chunks'have a 'bad taste' feel to them while some stories are over complicated like 'deptford voodoo' or don't seem to work wihtin the short time like '13' which just comes off as amateurish rather than the epic finale it tries to be in tying all the stories together - however get past the dodgy first episode 'dead meat' and avoid 'lacuna' which has a combination of dodgy effects, bad acting and an unoriginal storyline and there are a few gems in this series which make it worth the while, 'vampirology', 'the one where', 'the sum of the parts' and the excellent 'boys club'.

4 out of 5 stars An achievement for British horror.   February 11, 2004

Hugely underrated, urban gothic is essentially a collection of short stories, most of them drawing inspiration from staples of the horror genre (as well as famous examples, such as the bodysnatchers.) The jewel in the crown of the first season is an episode entitled 'Old Nick,'which was one of the most chilling tv episodes I have ever seen and about as dark as it gets. Incidentally Urban Gothic was sidelined after the first season and eventually cancelled, but the twisted and slightly quirky nature of the series remains appealing.
