GOOD PRODUCTION OF THIS CLASSIC September 20, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
King Learbr /The dark and brooding world inhabited by Lear and his three daughters must rank as one of the world's greatest works of invention in the Shakespearean canon. Blessed is magnificent in the title role in this powerful new cinema version of the bard's great tragic work.br /Directed by and starring Brian Blessedbr /br /
What Crap! Lear has never been done real justice April 5, 2004 4 out of 20 found this review helpful
when i watched this i was immediately doubtful due to the actors and rightly so. this i worse than the 1985 ITV production- both pagen adaptaions are weak. the lear in this one i review (Brian Blessed) is weak the random hand movements and the weird hair make this great play less believable than it already is. perhaps the best thing about this adaptation is cordelia though not used fully. it has a useful interpretation of the age the characters would be - they are some what younger than most. the worst thing about this would be the storm sceen. it is very fake one can see the false setting in the back, the main speech at the begining of ACT 3 is set in his head, making you wonder whether the storm is in Lears head or not. this films main problem seems to have been budget- perhaps why the Russian version is so much better. one can only hope that one day the national theatre will make a dvd of there 1997 production with ian holmes as lear once on TV but now not avaiable to buy was the best production see for a while. Brian Blessed production of Lear is better than laurence olivias it terms of being able to understand what the characters say but other than that this by far a much worse production if not the worst. i would go as far to say that the american hollywood version of Lear, 100,000 acres, is better.
