| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review II Love You to Death/I is a spotty black comedy from Lawrence Kasdan (IThe Big Chill/I)--based on a true story--that stars Kevin Kline as a womanising pizzeria owner whose mousy wife (Tracey Ullman) tries multiple ways of murdering him with the aid of sundry friends and hired hands. The film never picks up the necessary momentum or develops the necessary tone to drive it and one is left picking and choosing which of the performers is at least adequately entertaining. Kline is good but perhaps a bit too theatrical and Joan Plowright is hilarious as his mother-in-law. The funniest joke in the whole thing belongs to William Hurt and Keanu Reeves as deeply stoned, would-be-killers who emerge from a taxi and look as if they can't remember what planet they're on. --ITom Keogh/I

Watch it for the confession scene December 23, 2007 This quite a unique movie. It's worth a watch regardless of what others might say.br /br /I Love You To Death tells a [true] story about a cheating husband trying to be knocked off by his wife. Poisoning is the first choice. When the over dose of pills don't work, they ask a very love struck bus boy to pull the trigger. There last resort is to hire 2 very drugged up "hitman."br /br /Kevin Kline, Tracey Ullman, Joan Plowright are very good playing this slightly dysfunctional family. River Phoenix is also very convincing as a moonstruck, busboy. And there is William Hurt and Keanu Reeves. I do have to agree with the person whose comment said, "They make Dumb and Dumber look like yale graduates." br /Brilliant Confession Scene that forms part of the film's trailer...
Keanu's performance is adorable! December 8, 2003 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I know many people would say that Keanu Reeves' asset is only his looks, but they are totally wrong!brI believe only Keanu can play a drug addict that lovable.brThis film is one rare crime drama that is truely heartwarming and hilarious.brJust enjoy with a nice piece of pizza!
Should black comedies have happy endings? November 20, 2003 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
An interesting and largely enjoyable comedy whose cartoon-like characters manage to find the funny side of everyday things like adultery and attempted murder. Like Lawrence Kasdan's best films (Big Chill, Silverado) this is essentially an ensemble piece with everyone getting their turn in the spotlight. Kevin Kline's romantic Italian seems a close relative Chico Marx. Joan Plowright is the Yugoslav mother-in-law from hell. William Hurt and Keanu Reeves (who actually acts for a change) perform a Cheech and Chong-like double act as a pair of stoned assassins. Most pleasant surprise is Tracey Ullman's effective, and largely straight, role as Kline's long-suffering wife who is prompted to murder him when she discovers that he is a serial adulterer. But she wants it done nicely ("I want him dead, but I don't want him hurt" she explains). There are many wonderful moments as the cast bounce (sometimes literally) off one another. Some good dialogue, too (Kline's opening confession is priceless). But Kasdan's overall pace is somewhat uncertain. Moments that should be peaks - such as when the police discover Kline in bed with bullet wounds - seem to just fizzle out. And the happy ending - in such a black comedy - seems curiously misjudged. But there are many compensations, including the fact that the film does not seem to be overly concerned with political correctness.
I love you to death September 5, 2003 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I absolutely loved this film. I laughed all the way through from the first line to the last. The acting was fantastic especially River Phoenix and Kevin Kline who were sensational. If you are looking for a comedy I strongly recommend this film. It's one you will watch over and over again.
