Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
IIn View/I is meant as a companion piece to REM's best-of album, IIn Time/I, but it works well as a collection in its own right. A video history of some of the Athens, Georgia band's biggest songs, its focus is firmly on the latter part their long career, with videos from IAutomatic for the People/I ("Everybody Hurts", "Man on the Moon", "Nightswimming", "Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite"), IOut of Time/I ("Losing My Religion"), IMonster/I ("What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"), INew Adventures in Hi-Fi/I ("E Bow the Letter", "Electrolite"), IUp/I ("Daysleeper", "At My Most Beautiful"), and IReveal/I ("Imitation of Life", "All the Way to Reno"). There are just two videos from their pre-breakthrough album IGreen/I ("Orange Crush" and "Stand"), though admittedly they shied away from making videos early in their career. p Still, nobody can fault the presentation of IIn View/I. Of course, the promos are spectacular, if occasionally too self-consciously artsy, but there's even more here. There are three live videos, recorded in Trafalgar Square, and six additional, rarely seen videos ("Tongue", "How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us", "New Test Leper", "Bittersweet Me", "Lotus", "I'll Take the Rain"). Best of all, though, is the ability to watch them with or without brief, introductory interviews with the band, which give a window into REM's ongoing appeal: as talented as they are, they're still refreshingly human pop stars. I--Robert Burrow/I

All of the videos for the songs on the album (with the exception of animal) along with rare videos and live vidoes an all round great package

5 out of 5 stars Absolute classics   November 27, 2003

REM have always been a bit onnthe quirky side, certainly in their personalities, definetly in their lyrics, but no more so than in the videos. Compiled in reverse chronological order, starting with Bad Day, and moving back through the last 15 years to Stand, each one is an absolute treat and it's own little trip down memory lane. Stipe's haircuts at the end of the eighties are beautifully captured as only DVD can. As are the classic moments such as the shaven-headed unveiling in What's the Frequency Kenneth? and the uplifting motorway walkout of Everybody Hurts. pBut the best bit is far and away the 3 tracks from the Nelson Mandela tribute in Trafalgar Square in 2001. This was the eopsiode when Peter Buck got arrested for rock-star behaviour on the 747 over here - but God it was worth it! Ram packed with fans, the square all lit up and looking better than ever, and Man on the Moon wowing everybody. Turn it up, pack all your mates into your living room and re-create the experience over and over again. yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Innovative Videos From A Great Band   November 17, 2003

I wasnt an REM fan untill recently, and Im glad I bought this DVD because its a really good introduction if youre new to the band.pThe first thing that I noticed about the videos was how innovative they are. For example the video for "Imitation Of Life" would be a regular performance video had parts of the video been played backwards. "Whats The Frequency Kenneth" features weird camera positions, you cant see all of Michael's head in the same shot for the majority of the video. If you watch the very arty "Losing My Religion" video and then watch Metallica's mid 90's videos, especially "Untill It Sleeps", you can see straight away where Metallica stole their ideas from.pPersonal favourites are "Everybody Hurts", the very upbeat "Stand" and the extremely well made "Bad Day". However, my favourite one of all is "Man On The Moon". The bonus videos are not as good and innovative as the main videos but they are still worth a view.pThe videos do enhance rather than distract from the greatness of Stipe's lyrics. One of the best lines Ive ever heard is "Sure all men are created equal, heres the church, heres the steeple, please take two we kept a sequel, ashes ashes we all fall down" from "Bad Day".pAnother thing that hits you straight away is that REM have never really had an image. With the Manic Street Preachers, for example, you can associate a certain image with a particular album. With REM this isnt the case and the fact that they wear different clothes in every video makes the videos a bit more hard to remember if youve only just got into the band, but it doesnt detract from the overall product.pOne of my favourite bands, Nirvana, was once described by ex Big Black frontman and well known producer Steve Albini as "REM with a fuzzbox". And I suppose hes right in a way in that both bands have written some of the greatest songs of all time.pKeep it up guys.

5 out of 5 stars View 'In Time' in 'In View'   October 12, 2003

This is a treat... sixteen of R.E.M.'s best videos accompanying the songs on the 'In Time' compilation (released simultaniously) on this 'In View' DVD. If that wasn't enough to perk interest, there's more: there are six bonus videos, from songs not featured on In Time, as well as live performance footage from Trafalgar Square. All of this makes this a must for fans. Non-fans should not loose interest though, as R.E.M. have always been one of the most inventive bands in thier approach to the music video (a medium they shied away from in thier early years), each piece is an artwork unto itself. Whether it's the punchy anonimity of the 'What's the Frequency Kenneth?' video or the enchanting monochrome of 'Man on the Moon', these videos are some of the best short films ever made. Oh, and the music is also quite good (so I hear). Whether you're into music videos or not, this would be an excellent addition to any DVD collection.
