Synopsis
A limited edition box set featuring 'Home Alone' in which young Kevin McCallister has been mistakenly left at home in Chicago when his family rush off to spend Christmas in Paris. 'Home Alone 2 - Lost In New York' in which once again Kevin McCallister is left to fend for himself when his folks accidentally leave him behind in New York. When the two burglars Harry and Marv show up Kevin spends the rest of the Christmas vacation making their lives hell... 'Home Alone 3' in which Alex has chicken pox and is home alone when an international team of criminals invade the area looking for a computer chip. The chip has accidentally found it's way into Alex's bedroom... and 'Home Alone 4' in which Kevin McAllister finds himself 'home alone' in the computer controlled house of his dad's new girlfriend, Natalie.

4 out of 5 stars Three good films and one duff!   June 17, 2008
The first two Home Alone films with "Kevin" are really enjoyable, and even the third film with "Alex" is hilarious fun. Definite recommendations for Christmas!
However the fourth film seems to be made by a completely different team with an absolutely terrible story, unconvincing script and acting. It completely ruins the collection so I would recommend only getting a set containing the first three films if possible and pretend the fourth one was never made!

5 out of 5 stars Home Alones have become seasonal family films   June 9, 2008
It could be argued the original was the best and certainly Home Alone has become a Christmas Film never forgotton as one of the top films of this time....Kevin McCallister's famous exploits whilst he had been left behind at home or forgotton by his family as they made their way to Paris during the Christmas holiday will always be remembered as the festive tree topper of it's time...In an almost Panto-esque storyline there could be no better villains to steal the limelight as the "Wet Bandits" or common house burglars than Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern....what follows is Kevins attempts to thwart their burgling of his house whilst he is home alone with some ingenious methods.....This can be hilarious in parts with a light hearted approach for the young at heart.....The sequels are entertaining but not as good as the original but in saying this once you watch the first you'll find it hard not to follow up out of sheer curiousity...Also stars Catherine O'Hara as Kevins concerned mother and John Heard as his father, with a cameo role played by the late John Candy....Top Rated seasonal entertainment for all the family.......

3 out of 5 stars The Home Alone Collection   November 2, 2007
This is merely all 4 Home Alone films on DVD, gathered together in a box, I ain't complaining or anything as I'm never really bothered as to how the box sets are.

The first two Home Alone films are easily the best. I loved watching these films at Christmas in my childhood, and watching them now reminds me of those good old days and helps revive the Christmas magic I lost long ago.

The first two featured a good cast of actors, mainly Macaulay Culkin as the main character Kevin Mcalister. It also features Catherine O'Hara and John Heard as Kevin's parents Kate and Peter Mcalister. Lastly the first two films star Joe Pesci as Harry and Daniel Stern as Marv; two burglers who's plans are foiled by Kevin. The second film features Tim Curry and Rob Schneider.

One thing I like in the first two films is that Kevin helps people out. In the first film he's scared of an elderly neighbour due to nasty rumours, but he finds none of them are true and he's a kind bloke. Kevin helps him reunite with his son, whom he hasn't spoken to in years and he's too scared to attempt to bridge their gap, as he fears his son won't want to talk to him.

Kevin makes him understand that he has nothing to lose, and should try, and Kevin personally feels that his son will want to speak to him again. If he doesn't, Kevin explains that at least the elderly man will know the answer, that way he won't have to worry and be afraid anymore.

He gives an example of how he's always feared the basement and has been forced to go down there recently, and found that it isn't too bad after all. Just a comparison he makes to the elderly man's situation.

In Home Alone 2 he meets a homeless woman who had her heart broken when her boyfriend left her. Since then she's been afraid of the situation repeating and has consequently alienated herself from the world. Kevin makes her understand that if she doesn't use her heart, then what's the difference if it gets broken? He tells her that she may as well, as she (like the elderly man) have nothing to loose. Again he makes a comparison to an incident that occured in his life. This time he mentions he had a pair of roller skates, which he never used, as he feared they would get ruined. He eventually outgrew them and therefore never used them.

Home Alone 3 is another good film, though nowhere near as good as the first two. Despite the criticisms the third film recieved, I didn't think it was too bad. On the contrary I found the film rather good. Yeah it didn't revolve around the Mcalisters this time and therefore featured new characters, which makes this film the odd one out in the Home Alone series, but it was still an enjoyable film.

The fourth however was a complete let down. It didn't come across to me as a proper film, but more like a film version of a kid's programme if you catch my drift. Maybe you don't, but watch it (if you think you can cope with something as boring as this) and you may see what I mean.

What completely ruined it was the many changes (the change of cast amongst them, though I completely understand why Macaulay Culkin wasn't recast for this, as he's grown up since). For instance, the Mcalister family has changed.

Kevin is now 9, despite he was 10 in Home Alone 2. Then again they ruined that by making it a year later, when Kevin was 8 in the first film. Kevin's older brother Buzz is aged 12 (that's what I estimate his age to be anyway), yet in Home Alone 2 he was in his late teens. Thirdly Kevin has one older sister and one older brother, yet he had a few in total in the first two films, and Buzz I think was the eldest.

Presumably this film would be set in the early 90's as the first two were made back then, yet this film features common stuff Kevin uses that wearen't around in those days. A CD re-writer for instance. Logically he should have used a tape recorder.

Another thing that ruined the fourth film is that it's nothing like the first three (at least Home Alone 3 stuck to the main plot). There's no Kevin setting up boobie traps to stop burglers. All he does really, is sneakily follow them, then take them by surprise, in which his traps backfire and lands him in trouble. This doesn't suit the title Home Alone in any way either, as he's never home alone in this film.

Anyway this is still a good box set, enjoyable to watch near Christmas, except Home Alone 4. Here's what the films are about...

HOME ALONE

The Mcalisters are going to spend Christmas in Paris. On the night before departure Kevin gets into trouble and wishes that his whole family would just dissappear. The next day the Mcalisters are very late getting up and just about make it to the airport, unaware that they've just left Kevin behind (although perhaps they wouldn't have if it hadn't been for that nosey kid who had to look through their stuff). Kevin wakes up the next day and ironically finds that he is home alone, just like he wanted.

He begins to enjoy his freedom of doing whatever he wants (watching a gangster movie whilst eating a large ball of ice cream for instance), but it's not long until he discovers that Harry and Marv are plotting to rob his house. It's up to Kevin and his clever booby traps to stop them...

HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK

Once again the Mcalisters are going to spend Christmas elsewhere (Florida this time) and once again Kevin gets into trouble on the night before departure. This time however he does come along with his family to the airport. Having lingered about to put fresh batteries in his tape recorder, he mistakes another bloke for his dad and ends up following him onto the wrong plane, headed for New York.

Kevin is horrified when he realizes he caught the wrong plane but he has a good time exploring the massive city and checks in at the royal Plaza (I think it was called that) hotel, with a convincing story, though one of the receptionists (Tim Curry) is immediately suspiscious. His family in the meantime try to locate his whereabouts.

Yet again Kevin runs into Harry and Marv who have just recently escaped from jail and plan to rob a shop, Duncan's Toy Chest. Once again it's up to Kevin to stop them..

HOME ALONE 3

Whilst on their way to an airport, group of terrorists hide a military computer chip in a remote control car. At the airport however, their bag is picked up by an old woman (obviously having mistaken the bag for her own). The terrorists track her down to Chicago and locate her residence. The trouble is finding the house she lives in. In the meantime a little boy named Alex is given the remote control car by the old woman as a reward for shovelling her driveway. He catches chickenpox that evening and is forced to spend the next few days at home.

Due to circumstances he finds himself home alone, which is when he witnesses the terrorists within one of the houses. He immediately calls the police and the terrorists manage to escape, making Alex look like a liar. It happens again the next day (though they would've caught the leader if they looked at the ceiling in the basement). Alex is suspscious and soon finds the computer chip. He realizes if he's going to catch the burglers, he's going to have to do it himself and arm his house with booby traps.

HOME ALONE 4

Kate and Peter Mcalister have split up and Peter is going out with a rather annoying woman named Natalie. Kevin is invited to spend Christmas with him. Peter and Natalie are going to have a prince (I think it was) come over on Christmas and end up going out every day, leaving Kevin all by himself with the butler Mr Prescot and the maid (I forget her name). He discovers Marv along with his new girlfriend Vera (wonder what happened to Harry) sneaking into the house. He learns of their plot to kidnap the prince and someone is obviously helping them. Kevin tries to stop Marv and Vera, but the pair always escape, and the things Kevin does produces disasterous results (flooding the house for instance) and Kevin is landed in trouble. Once again it's up to Kevin to stop them. It would have been better if he set up booby traps, rather then use the house's gadgets for back up.

Overall here's my personall ratings of the films...

HOME ALONE 1 9/10
HOME ALONE 2 8/10
HOME ALONE 3 6/10
HOME ALONE 4 2/10

Good films (except the 4th one), that are enjoyable to watch (except the 4th one). Get this box set.

4 out of 5 stars Home Alone   March 25, 2006

I bought the Home Alone boxset a while ago when Amazon were selling it for 10. You can't really complain at that price so I bought it. The first three films are good and despite the criticism the third film has had, it's still a worthy addition to the series. The fourth film, however, I hadn't seen before and it was beyond hope. It's an extremely bad film and possibly one of the worst ones I've ever seen. They essentially took characters from the first two films and got entirely new actors to play them. The acting is terrible. So is the story, dialogue etc.

If you try and forget about the fourth entry, the boxset is still a worthy purchase. The DVDs come with no special features though so all you're getting is the films.
