Amazon.co.uk Review
IPeter Gabriel: Growing Up Live/I presents the complete 2003 Milan concert from Peter Gabriel's tour based around the album IUp/I, featuring 17 tracks across 133 minutes. Performing "in the round", literally central to a memorable show is a revolving stage which sees Gabriel going for a cycle ride in an exuberant "Solsbury Hill", "Growing Up" inside a Zorb ball and delivering a gravity-defying sky walk "Downside Up" with daughter Melanie. Accompanied by regular sidemen David Rhodes (guitar) and Tony Levin (bass), Gabriel is joined by the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama for the spine-tingling finale of "Blue Sky", throughout mixing recent tracks like the abrasive "Darkness" and "The Barry Williams Show" with established crowd pleasers such as "Red Rain", "In Your Eyes" and "Sledgehammer". p Gabriel may be less wired than before, but he commands the arena with effortless charm and charismatic presence, his voice retaining all its paradoxically fragile power. Presented in the main with an understated blue light and shot in an unobtrusive, gimmick-free style, the concert begins and ends in virtual darkness with Gabriel alone at a keyboard; from the opening "Here Comes the Flood" to the final "Father and Son", IGrowing Up/I is rock theatre of rare intimacy, emotion and intelligence. p BOn the DVD:/B IPeter Gabriel: Growing Up Live/I is presented with a flawless 16:9 anamorphically enhanced picture and three soundtracks: rich and clear stereo, excellent Dolby Digital 5.1 and even more precise and detailed DTS. IThe Story of Growing Up/I is polished nine-minute documentary in which Gabriel talks about his ideas for the tour and the presentation of some of the songs. ITony Levin's View/I (five minutes) sets the song "More Than This" to photos taken by the bass player. Finally there are six sets of subtitles, including English. I--Gary S Dalkin/I

5 out of 5 stars Growing Up   August 24, 2008
I was loathe to buy Peter Gabriel: Growing Up Live [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC) because I couldn't see how P.G. could top "Secret World". I bit the bullet and bought it anyway.br /I wouldn't say it is better, or worse, than "Secret World"; It's better in some places, not so in others.br /And, if you're an admirer of Gabriel's audio/visual output, it's still worth having in your collection alongside "Secret World".br /I am.br /br /If I were to be so pedantic as to choose one criticism of it, it would be to say that I preferred Paula Cole's backing vocal on "Secret World" to P.G.'s daughter on "Growing Up".br /That is not to say that Melanie can't sing. Far from it. But this is my review and I found Paula's vocal performance on "Secret World" to be slightly more enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Peter goes all spinal tap!   February 3, 2008
This is a great DVD - good range of songs and supported by the band brilliantly. Production values are as high as you would expect from PG although there are moments where things get taken too seriously and it all seems a bit "Spinal tap" - especially the giant ball and the anecdote about making music with monkeys ( probably not the Dolenz type). Like so many musicians, PG does take himself too seriously on occasion but nevertheless this is a recommended purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!   December 16, 2007
It's easy to compare this unfavorably to Secret World, because of the less flashy stage show, if anything though the songs are better performed (if that's possible!) and offer more diversity. br /br /Secret World, Here Comes The Flood, and Digging In The Dirt are probably better live here than they are on record, Peter manages to express a power and emotion that was hard to translate onto the recorded versions of these great songs. br /br /And there's still room for some great stage props, like the giant rubber ball which PG bounces around in during the brilliant 'Growing Up', the bicycle he rides around the stage while singing 'Solsbury Hill', and of course when he and his daughter Melanie walk upside down midway through 'Downside Up'. br /br /Great extras to add to what is already a great value DVD and one of the best live shows I've ever seen, from one of the greatest artists this country has ever produced.br /br /Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Mr G   July 16, 2007
This really is an excellent DVD. It's a consummate performance of excellent material and playing all wrapped up in a visual intelligent feast. Be prepared to have your bubble burst. In the age of pulp pop this is well worth a rent/buy.

5 out of 5 stars Must have DVD   July 23, 2006

This is a great DVD of a great show. The songs are as powerful as ever and well performed. The effects, lighting and stage props are incredible, and the walking upside down part ('Downside up')is especially fun. Some of the more simply performed songs and less flashy stage tricks are also just as moving, Look at 'Signal to Noise' to see what I mean. This was an outstanding show live and this DVD offers a good representation of one of the concerts. The extras are fairly decent for a live DVD too! I wouldn't compare this to Secret World (as some other reviewers here have), in as much as I feel they are complimentary and one isn't better than the other, but different halves of the live show Gabriel puts on.
