4 out of 5 stars Funny - slapstick - not a keeper ...   November 4, 2007
This is a comedy about a young couple who decides to buy a duplex just outside New York City. They have an irritating old woman living upstairs in a rent controlled apartment that they own as part of the property. He's a writer, struggling to finish his second novel. She's the supportive wife going off to work at a magazine in NY. The little old woman is a very old widow. br /br /During the course of the movie, the old woman continuously disturbs their sleep, destroys the writer's ability to finish his work, and generally disrupts the peace and tranquility they mistakenly thought they would attain with the purchase of the house. br /br /What follows is a myriad of very entertaining, slapstick comedy and a murder plot. This movie is funny, but somehow just misses the mark. So much more could have been done with the plot and parts of the story just fall flat. Though this is an entertaining movie I recommend that you rent, don't buy. You'll watch it once and live happily without watching it ever again. It is most definitely not a keeper.br /br /

4 out of 5 stars Beats the usual romantic-comedy   October 4, 2007
An easy going light-hearted romantic/slapstick comedy about a young couple plagued by their elderly tenant. I found it much more entertaining than the usual mushy couple films out there. Yes it's a bit over-the-top with storyline, but I found it to be a rather enjoyable romp.br /To be honest I'd read so many varied reviews about this film, I wasn't sure what to expect- people seem to love it or hate it, but I'm glad that I did give it a go and for the price you can't really loose out.br /Drew Barrymore Ben Stiller are what you would expect, but their troublesome tenant, Eileen Essell really shines out in this- managing to pull off sweet and evil at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Does one have to be English?   May 12, 2007
Maybe there is an English humour element to this sublime movie - it certainly calls to mind 'The Lady Killers' (original, of course). But no, Arsenic and Old Lace would qualify as a sort-of comparison. Duplex is a very, very funny film - and I'm not even a fan of Ben Stiller!

2 out of 5 stars DANNY DEVITO TAKES A DIVE WITH THIS ONE...   July 3, 2004

I recently flew to Seattle, and this was the in-flight film. I was intrigued, as I had never heard of it, and I enjoy Ben Stiller's movies. Moreover, this one was directed by Danny DeVito, and I had loved what he did with "The War of the Roses". So, I settled down to watch what I thought might be a somewhat dark comedy. After watching it, I decided that this film was chosen for in-flight viewing, as the audience was a captive one and could not leave. Had I seen it in the theatre, I am sure I would have been witness to people leaving mid-film. To add insult to injury, this film was the same one shown on the return flight. pThe plot is simple. A young couple, Alex and Nancy, buy their dream home, a large and lovely apartment in a turn of the century brownstone in Brooklyn. Replete with period detail, they fall in love with it, probably paying more than they should. The good thing is that the price includes an upper apartment, which is also part of the deal and would convert their apartment into a duplex. The only caveat is that the upper apartment is rented by an ancient crone, Mrs. Connelly, who pays under a hundred dollars a month in rent, as the apartment is rent controlled. pStill, they love the apartment so much that they buy it anyway, figuring that the tenant, whom they met, would not be there much longer due to her age and seeming ill health. Once they move in, however, Mrs. Connelly appears to have recovered her health and turns out to be quite an active and spry old woman who seems determined, in her own sweet way, to make the lives of the new owners a living hell on earth. Alex and Nancy hurry and scurry to meet their tenant's insatiable demands, which wreak havoc with their personal lives. This compels them to resort to various ways of getting her to move, all of which she seemingly resists without batting an eyelash. Finally, the harried, beleaguered couple is driven to seek a more permanent solution to their landlord/tenant problem. pThe film was clearly meant to be a dark comedy. It was dark, alright, because most everyone associated with it seems to have lost their way, but there is nothing really comedic about it. Ben Stiller's performance is strained, as he must have recognized early on that this film was not particularly funny. Drew Barrymore sleepwalks through her role as if she were on thorazine to quell any potentially psychotic behavior should she realize the turkey of a film in which she was acting. Harvey Fierstein manages to be annoying in the small, but pivotal, role of the real estate agent, while Swoosie Kurtz plays her role straight, rather than for laughs, and manages to avoid personal embarrassment. The only real saving grace is the performance by veteran British television thespian, Eileen Essel, in the role of Mrs. Connelly. She is the only reason the film warranted a rating of even two stars. Ms. Essel, however, must surely have a contract out on her agent for inducing her to make her feature film debut in this flop.

3 out of 5 stars A mediocre slapstick comedy   June 12, 2004

Duplex, by rights, should have been a major success. It stars the brilliant Ben Stiller and is directed by the hugely talented Danny DeVito (who made a superb job of directing Matlida in 1996). I expected it to be hilarious. It wasn't. That's not to say it was a bad film, just that I was disappointed by its inability to fulfil its potential. pThe story centres around young married couple Alex and Nancy (Stiller and Drew Barrymore). After months of searching, they finally come across a magnificant, roomy duplex in Brooklyn. The only problem is the little old lady - Mrs Connelly - who rents the top floor. Alex and Nancy are keen to evict the elderly Irish woman in order to make both floors theirs. It soon becomes clear, however, that their neighbour is not quite as sweet and frail as she appears. Unwilling to give up her much-loved home, she turns Alex and Nancy's life into a nightmare. Among other things, Mrs Connelly subjects the couple to an unbearable amount of noise by inviting her friends around early in the morning for brass band practise, late night TV at maximum volume, and a rendition of Riverdance in the early hours. It's not just the noise that irritates Alex and Nancy however, but the fact that she constantly calls upon her neighbours for help with trivial tasks, and at one point accidentally sprays Nancy's boss in the face with mace. pThere are some funny moments in the film: when Mrs Connelly chokes on a chocolate caramel, Nancy forces a reluctant Alex to perform mouth-to-mouth recusitation, whilst she gives air compressions. When the elderly lady regains conciousness to see her lipstick around Alex's mouth, and Nancy straddling her however, she soon get hold of the wrong end of the stick, and the police are called in. The occasion on which Alex, in a deadpan tone, reels off a lengthy list of methods he has contemplated employing for killing Mrs Connelly, was also very amusing. pIn conclusion, the main thing Duplex lacks is wit. I'd like to say that with its elements of slapstick it is aimed more at children than adults, but perhaps murdering an (albeit hugely irritating) old lady is not a subject most parents would allow their kids to view. Fans of Stiller and Barrymore may well enjoy the film, as the acting of said performers is top-notch. Otherwise, I'd give it a miss.
