2 out of 5 stars Garth Algar wants his wig back   July 3, 2008
This biopic, based on John Denver's autobiography, will be enjoyed by hardcore fans (like me) but is still awful in many ways. The story begins in the early 60s as John (Chad Lowe, looking exactly like Dana Carvey in "Wayne's World") begins his folk singing career. He meets Annie (Kristin Davis) and falls in love on the spot. They marry and move to Aspen, but as John's career takes off, tension builds in the marriage. They divorce, he has a short second marriage, and he discovers his love of flying, something that finally earns his stern father's (Gerald McRaney) respect. br /br /This movie is the Cliffs Notes summary of John's life but there is no depth or real emotion; it's just poorly-written and amateurish. Lowe mugs shamelessly throughout, playing a grinning innocent who never seems to grow up. (In fact, though the film covers thirty years, no one ages.) Davis is very pretty but the horrible script doesn't give her much chance to develop. McRaney plays the only character who seems real, and he's the villain of the piece. br /br /The story is shallow and rushed; John's personality never comes through. Lowe's hair is so laughable and distracting that the movie just doesn't have a chance. Although we hear Denver sing many of his songs, Lowe is terrible at lip-syncing. The DVD extras are worthless; where's some footage of the real JD we loved?

1 out of 5 stars Laughable   December 3, 2007

By the end of this film I was willing the main character to be erased - but as he seemed to be an escaped puppet from Team America he would probably return anyway. Whoever made this film must have hated Denver as he came across as selfish, whiney and stupid..oh let me put that into a song and sing it for you. I feel sorry for Annie..but not the two wooden children who looked like bystanders drafted in at the last minute. The best parts were the singing, where the makers put on the original recordings and the puppet mimed along..priceless. I quite liked Denver before this film (not that I would buy his stuff) but after seeing this film the very thought of him makes me want to punch one of the Thunderbirds..br /br /br /br /

4 out of 5 stars An Account of The late Great John Denvers Life and Music   October 28, 2007

This film is an excellent tribute to the late John Denver,it tells about how he met his wife Annie, his relatioship with his father and his children, his br /interest in maintaining the planet and the wildlife.br /You have all his beautiful music in the film, it is a fine tribute to the man and his music.br /Whether you are a John Denver fan or not, you will certainly enjoy this movie.br /Before Al Gore got on the conservation bandwagon, John Denver was doing his best to protect our planet and wildlife, by making us aware through his music.
