American teenage wish fulfilment film December 31, 2008 Enjoyed The Princess Diaries ? What a Girl Wants may be right up your street. Unless you're British, of course, in which case the general cringe-worthiness of this 'Brits are all right deep down but they need to be made cool by Americans' picture may be more than you can stomach.br /br /The premise is sound enough: a Tory peer has a wild youth and almost marries an American singer. When she discovers what this might do to his career, she goes back to the States, and is surprised when she bears his daughter a few months later. When she's 17, the daughter, Daphne (Amanda Byrnes, of Nickelodeon fame), decides to go to England, where she discovers her father is about to marry a society divorcee. Various antics ensue, as Daphne falls for singer Ian, who, slightly implausibly, grew up and was educated in England in 'all the right schools', but has a strong Australian accent (despite the fact that the actor, Oliver James is, in fact, English). In the mean time, father Lord Dashwood (Colin Firth, yes, that Colin Firth) is standing for parliament, in what we assume must be a byelection.br /br /A little research might have gone a long way. Unlike the fictional country of Genovia, the customs of London society can't simply be made up, and neither can the British electoral process. So, the collapse of a chandelier is front-page news on national newspapers, the Queen turns up for an election party, there appears to be only one band in the whole of London, and society is full of people trying very hard to be posh, when they quite obviously aren't. Lord Dashwood intends to be prime minister, but he's actually bossed around by virtually everyone he meets, and can only be counted on to overreact to every situation. br /br /If you're happy for London to be represented by a couple of black cabs, a red double-decker bus or so, and a smattering of actors who really do look like British royalty, then you'll probably overlook this. For the rest, the acting is ok, and the plot, if a tad predictable, is fine for an undemanding evening's viewing. However, you might prefer the 1958 original, The Reluctant Debutante, if you can find it on DVD, of which this is a remake, or you might just prefer to watch the Princess Diaries again. And, if you're American, and want to find out what posh British girls are like, you would probably be better off watching St Trinian's [2007], which is better researched, more accurate, and a whole load more fun.
really good! April 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i thought this movie was really good, a bit unrealistic though as her father wouldnt have been in the u.s peace corps as he was english. it is defintly worth a watch.
For a Perfect Sleepover Night ! February 20, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I got this movie from London from my dad from HMV, and I countn't wait to see it and I watched it that very night and it was AMAZING! YOU HAVE TO SEE IT NOW. Basicly it's about this girl (Amanda Bynes) who went looking for her dad (Colin Firth)in London and he is a top Parliment worker and he also owns a very big expensive mansion with his new engaged wife and her daughter. They are haveing a great time together until his ferince ruins everything. She has a whicked time going to Dress shows, Balls and Garden parties.I LOVED IT, YOU WILL TOO.br /THE PERFECT TEENAGE FLICK CHICK FOR YOU AND YOUR GIRLFRIENDS TO WATCH GIGGLE AND LAUGH!br /
The Battle Of The Cliches May 13, 2007 1 out of 17 found this review helpful
This silly movie is full of the most ignorant cliches about England gathered in one film--even Americans who've never been there know better. But I can't feel too broken up about that, as I've seen too many British-produced movies and television programs with just as silly and tired cliches about the United States(one memorable one was the American characters and depictions of California in the cozily smug television program "As Time Goes By".). But even besides that, the movie is excrutiatingly sappy and the "cute" quotient makes my teeth hurt. Not to mention its message of "be true to yourself" is about as deep as a finger bowl. And if I see one more film expounding the idea that "a little child(or know-it-all teen) shall lead them", I'm going to go find some babies to pinch.

ok this is a wonderful full of fluff cute chick flicky film (although i know some lads who love it too). Bynes is adorable - try shes the man thats awesome too. colin firth is forever perfect as the broody hero yet to come out of his shell. oliver james is a relative newcomer who is gorgeous sweet. his singing is great too. br /the story is sweet. some weepy bits but over all good laughable fun!br /you wont regret buying this!
