Amazon.co.uk Review David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd's sitcom I'Allo 'Allo/I started life in 1982 as a modest one-off spoof of the classic 1970s drama series ISecret Army/I. A throwback to an earlier era during the 1980s heyday of alternative comedy, the show's decidedly un-PC mix of bedroom farce and crudely drawn national stereotypes was subsequently stretched over nine series in all (1984-1992), making it TV's successor to the long-running ICarry On/I series. I'Allo 'Allo/I was not only similarly preoccupied with seaside postcard humour, it was also blessed with a cracking ensemble cast (including ICarry On/I veteran Kenneth Connor) whose sheer energy eked out comic gold from even the laziest jokes about humourless Germans, cowardly Italians, "Tally ho!" Brits and onion-selling Frenchmen. Like Croft Lloyd's IAre You Being Served/I, it was the cast interaction more than the material itself that produced the laughs. Despite its determination never to vary the formula from week to week, the show had at least one virtue--it wasn't afraid to offend anyone. --IMark Walker/I

A Classic Series July 24, 2006 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I dont wish to say too much about series 3 and 4 except to say it follows in the tradition of the first two series. Enhanced by a new barmaid and an airman who is disguised as a French Police Officer ("Gud Moaning, I have a massage for Ronny") it remains a laugh a minute throughout with some hilarious episodes. For instance, tunnelling into a prisoner of war camp, a barmaid disguised as a nun being flown through the air on a kite, German Officers desperatly trying to avoid the Gestapo Officer Herr Flick getting his hands on the real painting of the Fallen Madonna with the big, well you know what I mean. When are the remainder of the series being released though? Hope its soon so I can complete my collection.
Listen vegggy caggggefully.... July 20, 2006 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
One of the best. Just brilliant. Enjoy it. Subtitles! good for that. We are all waiting for the sale of the stock of Series 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 so Playback decides to keep going with the remaining 6 series. By the way, Playback: still waiting for Keeping up with appearances Series 5 and Specials to complete my collection. Thanks!br /
One of the best sitcoms ever June 23, 2006 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
I grew up with this series and love the carry on style humour. It's a great shame that the final 5 series have not been released on DVD. I think the reason for this is because Series 5 is very long - around 20+ episodes because the show became popular in America. br /br /The BBC should make the effort and put all these episodes out on DVD. This is one of the most under-rated comedies and needs to be brought to a new wider audience. A true British classic comedy.
I shall say this only once..... March 19, 2006 21 out of 22 found this review helpful
This DVD of series 3 and 4 continues from series 1 and 2 as Rene the "humble" owner of Cafe Rene continues to be a 'valuable' member of the French 'De Gaulle' resistance as well as keeping the Germans and Gestapo happy. Meanwhile his wife, Edith, continues to fail to notice Rene's liaisons with the two waitresses at the cafe, Yvette and Maria, and later in series 4, Mimi. Rene also continues to be frequently annoyed by the ever present Monsieur Le Clerc, the idiot, Officer Crabtree, the Englishman with bad French and the two British airmen who can't speak a word of French. These components make this a first class comedy with plenty of great jokes and cock ups. pIf you saw the first two series, you'll definitely love these next two series. The third series starts with the British airmen making a surprise comeback to the Cafe Rene. This is just the start of a variety of antics as the "brave" Rene and the members of the Resistance attempt to stall the German War Machine. pSo watch out as;p* There are some frantic antics involving many devious schemes by Colonel von Strom, Captain Geering and Lieutenant Gruber, Rene, Edith and Yvette, and Herr Flick and Helga as they try to swap some sausages in General von Klinkerhoffen's wardrobe in the Chateau.br* The resistance cook and cock up more plans to help the escaping airmen, involving an antique vehicle rally.br* Rene and Edith advertise for a new waitress, with Rene having slightly different expectations than Edith.br* Tunnels being dug so the British airmen can tunnel INTO a prisoner of war camp. But will they make it in before General von Kinkerhoffen's inspection?br* Everyone but Officer Crabtree, Edith's mother and Monsieur Le Clerc make it to the prisoner of war camp, including Colonel von Strom and Captain Geering. Various plans are devised to help them escape. Who will make it out?br* Rene and the gang end up in a dust cart driven by Lieutenant Gruber. Why? Captain Geering manages to escape but is captured by the communist resistance, plus some weird and scary camp dance. Watch it!!!br* Captain Alberto Bertorelli, an over/undersexed Italian Captain, arrives in the town and he likes looking at paintings???br* Mimi, the new waitress learns to fly ON a kite!!! Watch it!!!br* An epidemic of German Knockwurst and Italian salami hits the Cafe Rene.br* Herr Flick being imprisoned, in a disguise as a woman of the opposite sex!!!br* The town convenience being blown up involving Edith, a grenade and a pin??? Meanwhile Edith's mother takes a very quick tour of a requisitioned vineyard on a motorized bath chair.br* Is it really possible that Rene had on his hands a genuine Van Gogh that involves his mother-in-law?br* Not forgetting Captain Geering's brilliant acting in "The Gateau from the Chateau", involving,(pause for breath), "the dart in the heart", "the pill in the till", "the drug in the jug", "the candle with the handle" and "the gateau from the chateau", in honor of the Kaiser's birthday. IT'S HILARIOUS. pIf you ask me, there are some strange goings on in the small French town of Nouvion. brIf all of these events weren't enough for you, wait for the other five series of 'Allo 'Allo, which will hopefully be brought out by the BBC soon. Hope this is helpful, Enjoy!!!
A great series that draws you in! January 5, 2006 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
A wonderful time is had by all. This story just keeps on going and sometimes feels like a rollercoaster that you just don't want to get off of! The cast is great and the plot is so predictable that it is hilarious!brThe only other thing I can say is, "Where the heck are the rest of the episodes?"
