5 out of 5 stars Doppleganger   December 1, 2007

Mr Klein got a rough ride from the critics, but it's every bit as impressive as I remembered it being. In many ways it's a classic Doppelganger plot, but by placing it in the run-up to Vichy France's deportation of the Jews (ascribed entirely to the French here: while we see their officials silently preparing throughout the film, it's more than a hour before we see a single German uniform, and then only in a cabaret audience) it takes on a wider significance. It even makes Klein's mounting obsession with the other Mr Klein (only once fleetingly glanced from behind by a completely disinterested camera) credible as it becomes stronger than his will to survive. Impressive.

5 out of 5 stars A deeply menacing film   October 18, 2002

What a brilliant film this is - it really deserves to be better known. Alain Delon plays M. Klein, a rather self-satisfied member of the bourgeoisie who is mistaken for another M Klein (a Jew) in Nazi occupied France. Events move so fast that he (and the viewer) always seem one step behind. The period detail of (I assume) Paris is beautiful. The film is full of shadows and half lit events, suspicions, unspoken thoughts and mystery. There is a wonderful scene where M Klein receives an invitation intended for the other M Klein and finds himself being driven through the fog to a huge chateau where he encounters Jeanne Moreau. Small details (the other M Klein played the flute) take on weird significance. This is nightmare territory and I was left thanking god that that period of history is behind us. The film is beautifully constructed, spare and haunting. I can't recommend it enough.
