Amazon.co.uk Review IThe King of Comedy/I, which flopped at the box office, is actually a gem waiting to be rediscovered. Like IA Face in the Crowd/I (a not-so-distant cousin to this film), INetwork/I, and IThe Truman Show/I, its target is show business--specifically the burning desire to become famous or be near the famous, no matter what. Robert De Niro plays the emotionally unstable, horrendously untalented Rupert Pupkin, a wannabe Vegas-style comedian. His fantasies are egged-on by Marsha, a talk-show groupie (brilliantly played by Sandra Bernhard) who hatches a devious, sure-to-backfire plan. Jerry Lewis is terrific in the straight role as the Johnny Carson-like talk-show host Jerry Langford. De Niro's performance as the obsessive Pupkin is among his finest (which is saying a lot) and he never tries to make the character likable in any way. Because there's no hero and no-one to root for, and because at times the film insists we get a little too close and personal with Pupkin, some will be put off. Yet it's one of Scorsese's most original and fascinating films, giving viewers much to consider on the subject of celebrity. Its inevitable climax is clever and quietly horrific. --IChristopher J Jarmick/I

A fantasist lives his fantasy August 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Again I was completely ignorant of this film which is a gem. I can see why it was not a box office hit as it has an uncomfortable humour about it.br /br /It predates reality television which now makes some of the antics of the hero positively normal.br /br /Robert de Niro is a sad would be comedian who lives with his mother in a fantasy world. Until you get used to it you cannot tell which is real and which is fantasy.br /br /It is a story of self delusion which is now commonplace in programmes like X Factor. In those programmes it is a a harmless delusion but in this film it has more dramatic results. The ending is a gem and is totally unexpected so I wont tell you what it is.br /br /It is life imitating art as these days any news event is immediately thought of as having potential for a film even though we all know what happened. It is as though writers do not have the imagination to think up good stories.br /br /In fact if I see " Based on a true story" I usually think it has little to recommend it as the author should be able to think up more fantastic things than what happens in the news. I may have to revise this opinion as the news becomes more unbelievable than fiction.br /br /I used to like Jerry Lewis when I was a kid but his comedy has not stood the test of time but he was very good in this film as he may of course been playing himself.br /Your are lead to believe that the main character Rupert Pupkin does it all just to impress his girlfriend which it does.br /br /If I have any complaint it is the use of a comedy name of Rupert Pupkin. this is trying to tell you that he is a bit weird as he has to explain it to everyone he meets.it is unnecessary to have joke names as the story and acting is so strong.br /br /A film I would happily watch a few time which is more than I can say for a lot of films. Good story and well drawn characters that you actually care about it.
Exceptional and Tragic-Beautiful May 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a film; easily makes it into my top five films. It is so very stylish, elegant, funny; it is also very dark. br /br /A wondrous achievement. Watch it.
The Prince of Scorcese's Movies July 29, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Almost prophetic tale of society's dangerous obsession with celebrity and the media's manipulation of it. What an insightful film this was/is by that gifted film maker. Very dark satire on the media circus beautifully underdirected by Scorcese, equally underplayed by DeNiro. Subtlety is the key word here, as the director teases out the dark humour of a whacky attempt by a likable misfit to live out his dream of being 'the king of comedy'. DeNiro should at least have been nominated for this one, for me it's his most accomplished performance. Very differently played to his Taxi Driver role, he allows us to really sympathise with his character here, as loopy as he is. Great plot, great casting - Jerry Lewis was a revelation in a straight role as a hugely successful, but dissatisfied and privately miserable TV comedian - the film doesn't miss a trick in making a statement about celebrity in any way it can. In fact Langford is almost as strange a character as Pupkin, in his rather removed and cynical persona. This is just a great project from beginning to end, and possibly the last of this director/actor partnership's great collaborations, for me anyway, as I lost interest in their obsession with the mob type ultra violence which everyone else seemed to get off on. This is much better stuff.
You don't just walk onto a stage........ March 7, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
The King of Comedy is best remembered as a notourious work by Martin Scorsese that flopped the box office, it was also credited as having both a difficult shoot and frustating to make, but at least Scorsese went into overdrive, especially in this case to ensure he produced a piece of gold for us all to love when the time was right. The film has all of a sudden steadily growing into a cult favourite.br /br /Rupert Pukini, an annoying talentless freakshow who's deeply obessive in celebrities and especially chat show style comedy in particular. His life is a mess and his career isn't going too great either, in fact, what his career all about anyway? He starts picking on his idol, Jerry Lanford who struggling to stay at the top and is losing his patience with his fans, where it is a case of asking questions from the big man. Lanford, doesn't want to know and when Pukini doesn't get the answers, he resorts to kidnap and ransom...........br /br /According to Bob Woodward, we are now living in [...] culture, where stupidity is admired and brains ignored. The King of Comedy deals with the sake of being a comedian to acquire celebrity status. The King of Comedy is a pun, because the King in this Case, Langford is on a losing streak and his odds are down, he doesn't have such a good hand with little control over his rapid media frenzy either and is about to lose his beloved crown to the loser, Rupert Pukini-who is orginally treated like his forgettable name as a nobody who makes the grade to become a somebody.br /br /I didn't understand The King of Comedy fully until i saw it on my third viewing, but it is the harsh nature of showbizness, what the audience wants, the audience gets and they don't matter who gets hurt. br /br /The acting from both main actors, DeNiro as Pukini and comedian Lewis as Langford is a perfect combination and their straining reaction to one another, makes it for me. Jerry Lewis plays Langford as a man dogged with stress, over exposure and a long, but tiring career, he's sick of the intrusion and his once hunger of the limelight is heading straight for his demise. Lewis who came out of semi-retirement to play this role, makes him cold-hearted, constantly depressed, dippy, sulky and stubborn. The screenplay from the late Paul Zinnermann even gives his character, very crude, appeatising one-liners and quotes on top to digest. Carson, who i have found out was originally considered, going down a storm in the States for 30 years with The Tonight Show, would be have been wrong, it needed a bleak optisim of life, money-obbessive, bogged down by pressure and ratings which Lewis firmly protrays and his experience in the field shows his strength as a powerful player. Flawless. DeNiro does his best as Pukini and being at the height of his career, gives him an edge, he sees Langford as a rival and not neccessary a person he enjoys, but to rob him of his career is an option he wishes to fulfil in order to enjoy his fame and fortune. The scenes when Pukini imagines Langford, one in a restaurant and studio, show his determination for Langford to acknowledge his gift, to see him tire of the job wanting him for his ideal, but much hated replacement on the act.br /br /The editing was tight, how Rupert held on to the concept of becoming a superstar and Lanford, on a tight rope, how clearly Rupert is pushing Lanford over the edge to be disposed off as a finished talent. The film also observes how comedians, if they are no longer top of their game in particular are taunted and scrunitised. The scary thing that proposed in The King of Comedy however is when we see comedians today, we are usually more interested in their antics, finding Langford's off-screen behaviour a treat and his puns washing off us instantly with miniual interest, it happens here, watch carefully, do you "actually" laugh at what he comes up with?br /br /A under-rated and under valued Scorsese project, is becoming a firm favourite of mine after purchasing this DVD copy and deserves to be in Scorsese's top 5 films. A huge acheivement of comic propotion, this proves Black Comedy comes natural if the script works. I will always love that Jerry!br /br /
Terrific film January 20, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one those masterpieces that don't get enough recognition. Maybe this one is too "weird" and dark to be considered funny enough or serious enough. Sure this movie is a bit oddball but I still love this one. De Niro's performance is quite funny and yes disturbing. Our hero of this movie might be little too unbalanced (in a nonlikeble way)to be likeble, but somehow this one wins me over. In my opinion, this one ranks with raging bull, taxi driver and goodfellas as the best of Scorsese movies. May need more than one viewing to win you over. And oh yes, Jerry Lewis is great in this film. It's not a comedic role, but shows his talent as a serious actor also.
