Amazon.co.uk Review Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt corral a wild herd of rampaging children in ICheaper by the Dozen/I, an enjoyable family flick. When Kate Baker (Hunt) gets a book deal for her chronicle of their abundant family life, she also gets drawn into a book tour--leaving Tom (Martin) to run the house and cope with his new, high-pressure job as a football coach. Naturally, chaos erupts, bringing the family to the brink of meltdown. ICheaper by the Dozen/I is not a great movie or an important movie or even a surprising movie, but it is a warm-hearted crowd-pleaser. The Bakers' family life is a bit idealised and antiseptic, but anyone looking for an escape from their own less-ideal family lives won't mind. Also featuring Tom Welling, Hilary Duff, Piper Perabo and an uncredited Ashton Kutcher. --IBret Fetzer/I

an entertaining family film August 31, 2008 Lots of trouble, lots of action,a lovely house and nice locations make this time well spent in front of the tv screen.
Cheaper, but not Funnier, by the Dozen January 15, 2008 The Baker family has 12 kids. Admittedly, the parents started out wanting a large family. Tom (Steve Martin) was an only child and Kate (Bonnie Hunt) was from a large family, herself. But things went a little further then they had planned. Still, they and their kids are mostly happy, even if life is chaotic.br /br /But then things change. Tom is offered his dream job, coaching football for his alma mater. And Kate's book about their life actually gets published, leading to a national book tour.br /br /At first, everyone is happy by the changes. There's more money and more space in their bigger house. But slowly the kids realize that the parents don't have time for them any more. Can they get their parents' attention?br /br /I saw the original movie years ago and remember enjoying it (except for the ending). I was always curious to see this film. It wasn't exactly worth it. With so many characters, it's hard to get to know anyone, although I did empathize with Mark Baker right off the bat for some reason. Even the big name stars brought in for the older kids (Tom Welling and Hilary Duff) get lost in the shuffle.br /br /Furthermore, the plot doesn't really take advantage of the multiple kids idea. True, there are some comic moments, but much of this movie could have been done with 4 kids and gotten the same point across. Now don't get me wrong, I like the moral of the movie. I just think this film could have done better.br /br /If you've got nothing else to do, this movie will kill 98 minutes. There are worse ways to spend your time. But there are better ways, too.
An Advertisement for Contraception? December 22, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I know that this is supposed to be good old fashioned family entertainment, and far be it for me to come across as an old party pooper, although I am probably not the film's target demographic (being in my 20s and all), but seriously I feel that this film has some rather ideologically unsound aspects. Hopefully the children watching this movie won't be sophisticated enough to grasp quite yet the film's essentially pro traditional family, monogamy, mothers are better as nurturers than career women propaganda, but please god let us hope that adults at least are willing to acknowledge this, even if they did enjoy it nonetheless. It really sticks in my throat when a woman who has given birth to and reared twelve children no less, is unable to take two weeks out of her life, to dedicate to herself and promote the book she has lovingly written. Suffice to say she can't because Daddy simply cannot cope with looking after the children alone, despite the fact that Mommy probably had to put up with this obnoxious brood while he brought home the bacon for years before hand. There's nothing wrong with wanting to have a large family but I suppose in a world that is becoming increasingly expensive to live in, the film's supposed morals (family first, career second) are misplaced and irrelevant. I think this film is an excellent advertisement for contraception, it really isn't cheaper by the dozen and looking after such horrible children could seriously harm your health, career and future happiness. In its favour `Cheaper By the Dozen' features the beautiful angel that is Ashton Kutcher, perhaps reason enough to at least give it a passing glance. However when all is said and done there are far better children's films that tackle modern family dynamics. I would recommend `Mrs Doubtfire' as a more intelligent film of a similar genre.
Kid power! June 26, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is such a good movie! I has the funniest scenes and the best story to it! It is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen!br /The movie is with a family that has a mom, a dad, and 12 kids! The house is crazy! The whole story is about how a family, in this case the Bakers, can live with all the crazyness of 12 kids and all the problems that come up!br /It is so funny!
