5 out of 5 stars Best old drama   November 28, 2008
After first seeing this film at school film club aged 9 I've watched it everytime it appears on tv the final scenes trying to start the engine still bring tears to my eyes. The whole film builds up to this climax and it never fails. Every cast member hits the spot. Looking forward to it being on Blu-RAy.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection!   November 14, 2005

I first saw this film in the cinema when I was a boy of 6. Despite my youth and the long running time I was mesmerised by the story and the acting. Time seemed to stand still and the final scene was the climax of the film. The joy of those men was contagious. I remembered the film fondly. The beauty of such a film is that it could just as well have been done as a play on the stage. The whole film pivots around James Stewart and Hardy Kruger.brDo see the remake just to appreciate what a masterpiece this original is.

4 out of 5 stars A gripping story of survival (and Jimmy stewart in the lead)   October 31, 2004

Any film with Jimmy Stewart in a leading role is sure to be a hit and Flight of the Phoenix doesn't disappoint.brA plane crash in the desert follows into a gripping two hour film of survival and hope. Led by Jimmy Stewart, the crew which include great acting talents like Richard Attenborough, Peter Finch and Ernest Borgnine courageously try to survive the desert heat, lack of water, and high tempers between crew members. When all hope of a rescue is gone, an idea by a German model plane maker, to rebuild the crashed craft, initially not taken seriously by Jimmy Stewart, is eventually seen as the only option of survival and the movie climaxes into a gripping story of team effort and a race against time to get the plane flying. This is a highly recommended film that will have you on the edge of your seat right to the end. The film got 4stars because the UK DVD lacked even the simplest extra, like a trailer. I also recommend watching 'Sands of the Kalahari,' a simialr survival story.

5 out of 5 stars It's a classic   May 27, 2004

Contrary to other reviews on this film - this film is a stonker. James Stewart at his best, Ernest Borgine gives a memeorable performance. The tension is incredible and this film has influenced so many accident dramas since but none of them stand up to this. An Robert Aldrich classic. A cast of true actors and not hollywood premodannas. At the time of writing I am still waiting for my copy to arrive. Enjoy my friends !

2 out of 5 stars Good character study let down by an anti-climax   May 25, 2004
3 out of 13 found this review helpful

A film which delivers only half of what is expected. From the storyline it seems as though "The Flight of the Phoenix" is a suspense-wridden film from begining to end, but this is not true. The film is achingly slow, due to the overlong running time - just over 136 minutes long. An all-star cast work hard with the dire script from reknowned writer Lukas Heller. At times it is enjoyable, but the final flight of the rebuilt plane seems as an anti-climax after 130 minutes and the characters melodramatics. There are no DVD extras which isn't normally expected of 20th Century Fox. Buy it only if you have seen this film before, otherwise you will most probably be dissapointed.
