One of Mel Gibsons least mentioned films, but in my opinion one of his best. He is very convincing as a child like young man who falls in love with an older woman and all the complications it brings for them. Has a wonderful Austrailian cast, especially the actors who play his parents. A must see film...fabulous!

This is one of my all time favourite films. Mel Gibson is simply excellent as Tim - a slow, un-educated but charming young man, brought up by a loving working-class family, desperate to protect him from the cruel ways of the world. He meets Mary, a lonely, middle-class businesswoman, just entering middle-age and they soon become inseparable. Whilst Tim's parents are grateful that someone like her should care for their son, Tim and Mary meet with prejudice from his sister Dawnie. Piper Laurie, as Mary gives a brilliant, understated performance as do the actors who play Tim's parents. All four main characters are beautifully portrayed and it's obvious from his performance that Mel Gibson was destined to go on to greater things.
