I have adored this film since I was a young teenager and having just watched it again, I enjoyed it even more. The combination of Deneuve, Bowie, Sarandon and Bauhaus results in an effortlessly charismatic and other-worldly atmosphere, but just as importantly as the horror story it tells, I think this film beautifully brings the 1980s back to life.br /br /Beautiful and odd, perfect in spite of its faults, this is a hugely enjoyable film.

I quite like this movie. It's not one I'd recommend to my friends, but it's the first directorial effort of Tony Scott so it's worth a look to see how he cut his teeth. For the most part it's a case of style over substance, all billowing net curtains and slightly open blinds letting in the light. David Bowie is perfectly cast as an ageing vampire, while Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon smoulder in their lusting performances. It is dull in parts and some of it has dated badly, but it's still a good yarn, and you just don't get too many flicks like this one.

THE HUNGER - a rather naive and pedestrian film; the plot has been taken from a book and the director, Mr. Scott, follows it steadily. There are, of course. few things drearier than horror films that take themselves seriously, without a trace of wit, humour or self parody! Mr. Scott seems to have recently found out how to do close ups and we get a rather disconnected succession of them, frequently shot through a light mist (it may be tobacco smoke) with blowing muslin draperies. The actors are well known stars who do a practised job of playing themselves - this is something of a contrast against, for instance, Jean Rollin's use of fresh unknowns, or his imaginative use of long shots and varying camera angles, let alone his joy in images for their own sake. The film feels slow moving, with at times an unlikely sound track of imposed music.The camera technique is hard working but essentially routine and unimaginative. Quite an amusing film, but I found that I could only watch a few minutes at a time without some sense of boredom. Not as bad as, for instance, work by Dario Argento, but with something of the same determination to impress. The last ten minutes are especially reminiscent of the Dario Argento's sometimes frenetic self importance. A number of potentially interesting sub-themes are treated as routine and are left undeveloped. The dialogue is relatively sparse, but english subtitles would be helpful.

I had The Hunger on VHS and was always a fan of this movie. Although slightly arty, it ticks all the right boxes for visuals, mysterious storyline, good characters and the right actors playing them.pThe ending of the movie has always been slightly confusing(especially when you discover the book has a vastly different ending and offers no answers). Thankfully this DVD has an excellent commentary from director Tony Scott, and actress Susan Sarandon. The ending IS explained!! pThe extras on the DVD, while not exceptional, are good. The commentary, as mentioned above is interesting and quite amusing in places, with lots of information on not just the scenes you are watching but on the process of film making, and some of the off screen problems and fun. The Stills gallery is quite nice too.pIf you're a fan of the movie, or indeed any of the actors involved then you'll love this DVD. It loses one star as I hoped there might be a few more little extras on the DVD...but that's being REALLY picky!

The basis of this film is to wow its viewers with its stylish, chique and beautiful visuals and its emotive soundtrack to the point where the plot acutally doesnt seem to make any difference to the films excess.brThe acting is all exquisite, the sets depict wonderfully the lifestyle of the riche, nouveau-riche and aristocracy. Every aspect of the film compliments another, resulting in a combination so stunning both visually and soulfully. Erotic, beautiful and emotive. Hasnt aged at all. That other worldy, ethereal sensation never does.
