Usually a huge fan.. June 17, 2007 Unfortunately this really doesn't cut it. There are some potentially funny moments here but for me it just was a little too painful as we all know just how funny this could have been. A couple of good sketches, and the way in which Julie Walters uses her voice make this DVD partially worth while. I actually fell asleep during the final sketch as it was/is one out of a majority of unsuccessful ones... in my opinion!
Great but.... February 19, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a great DVD, fantastic writing and acting.brWe warned though that the cover of the DVD states that Julie Walters appears as Mrs Overall on the DVD, but she does not, it is a mistake.pStill great fun though.
Golden comedy moments February 16, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This old 1991 Thames Televison TV special has some of Julie Walters' finest comic moments on it. The best sketches are by far those written by (and also starring ) Victoria Wood - no surprise there! The opening one is one of my all time faves - two little girls (Wood and Walters) argue and play a game of "Jayne Mansfield's Balls"...it's hilarious, and if you remember it at all, it's worth the price of the DVD by itself. Or maybe you remember "Hello, I'm Mary Brasil, and I'm 53. Yes...53" This brilliant sketch features a stuck up Julie trying to film her own self-help video, and she gets it all wrong. Above all, this sketch really showcases her amazing comic talent, and it's all done in one take. pOther legendary scenes include Julie as frizzy-haired Rhona ("I'm a listener" ) in the beauty salon spouting her views on the world and people in general, and as a hilarious old crone in crusty makeup and a turban right at the end of the show. It's obvious which sketches are written by Victoria Wood - well I'm sticking my neck out here and saying it's these ones, because they are the funniest. The other sketches have Julie playing Victoria Wood's male dance partner at the pensioners social evening, a monologue Julie does as an Irish granny, and a duet of poetry in front of the telly with Willy Russell (I think).pMy apologies to fans of Russell, Alan Bleasdale and Alan Bennett, but for me and many other thousands of fans, Julie Walters is forever paired with Victoria Wood, and together they make pure comedy gold. The three aforementioned writers have also given Julie Walters fantastic roles and characters to play in previous TV shows and films (this show was originally intended as a showcase for Julie and the four writeres who have shaped her career), but I have to say that the sketches I listed at the start of this review are the cream of the crop, and they make this DVD a worthwhile purchase on their own. Well done to Network for re-releasing this on DVD so that we could finally ditch that old Castlevison video tape and savour these comic treasure all over again.
DVD at last... August 14, 2005 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast, and taping it them. I don't think it was ever re-shown and my old video copy soon bore the brunt of many repeated viewings, as I watched it with friends who had missed the original broadcast. brI watched it so often that I knew most of the sketches off by heart and me and I recall a friend and I amused ourselves by repeating them (complete with accented voices) to while away the time on a long roadtrip across the USA a couple of years later. brI think it features some of Victoria Wood's best writing for Julie Walters - in fact some of her best writing, full stop. Add to the mix the not inconsiderable writing talents of Alan Bennett et al, and what can I say? Thank God it's arrived on DVD at long last. My old video was about to fall to bits....
Julie Walters is a comic genius! August 9, 2005 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've had a rotten old videotaped copy of this for ages, which has been worn and worn. I know most of the sketches by heart but I still can't help watching it - some are achingly funny...esp Mary Brazzle and Rhona!! Julie Walters is a comic genius. I'm sooooo grateful it is now on DVD!
