watching this adaptation was like flicking through the book and picking out a few choice sentences-you cannot expect to successfully represent a dickens novel in 100 minutes so why even try? beatie edneys attempt to portray louisa gradgrinds cold nature was to frown at every given moment,whilst patsy byrnes role was almost comical in a novel where few laughs are found.this was originally meant for showing in schools but is more likely to put the viewer off reading dickens rather than encourage it!

this is the mid 1990's (not 1976!) bbc production of hard times, originally made for schools tv...br /br /but clearly making it on the cheap invoked an atmosphere of gloom and darkness, both extremely aptbr /br /'victorian' street scenes filmed near kings cross br /br /the acting is good too!br /br /now come on bbc - release this on region 2 dvd!
