4 out of 5 stars Classic Carlise   December 26, 2005

This is an excellent series. The story lines are very good and frequently have a good twist at the end. The Scottish landescape is a beautiful backdrop to this series. The casting director has chosen well. Here is a series which combines pathos and comedy well. Not always an easy combination - tears in your eyes and laughter behind your smile.pI look forward to the release of series 2.

Great humor, Gorgeous scenery. Worth the buy.brI am willing to bet that "West Coast Story" episode couldn't get the video rights to the "west side story" elements of the teleplay.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic series - but one missing episode   September 16, 2005

I ordered this dvd as soon as it came out, because Hamish Macbeth was such a brilliant series. However, just one quibble: on my dvd version, which seems to be the same as the one pictured and was released in September, there are only five episodes. In tiny print on the back it states 'Regrettably episode four West Coast Story is not available on dvd'. Why this episode is missing is a bit of a mystery, so maybe somebody can enlighten us?pHaving said that, the series is still worth buying. The characters are beautifully drawn, the stories quirky and lots of fun. I had forgotten just how gorgeous Robert Carlyle is as well! There really is something for everyone here, and it is one of the few programmes my husband and I are equally happy to watch. Looking forward to series two coming out - hopefully with all the episodes intact.

5 out of 5 stars Wee Jock's now content   August 8, 2005

Most times I've logged onto amazon I've checked for this DVD in the forlorn hope that the powers that be had finally listened to the pleas of a nation. Finally Success! Here in all their digital glory are the 6 episodes that make up the 1st series of Hamish Macbeth. Based on a series of books written by M. C. Beaton, this BBC drama follows local PC Hamish Macbeth as he strives to control the behavior of a small eccentric Scottish village. Although acutely good at his job, Hamish tries to keep as low a profile as possible so as to avoid promotion and the inevitable move away from his beloved Lochdubh.brHere's a list of the 6 episodes:p1) The great Lochdubh salt robberybr2) A pillar of the communitybr3) The big freezebr4) West coast storybr5) Wee Jock's lamentbr6) A bit of an epicpThe gentle comedy of the series, entwined equally with layers of pathos, intrigue and above all a sense of community is played out brilliantly by all the actors, notably Robert Carlyle as the eponymous hero and Shirley Henderson as the quiet but delicious Isobel. pHamish Macbeth continued for another 2 series before finally bowing out on a high. It spawned countless imitators due to its Sunday night success, leading to some truly dreadful 'Scottish' dramas that would have left Wee Jock shaking his furry head in dismay. If you want to see what good BBC drama is really like, buy this now.
