3 out of 5 stars Please please tell me now / is there something I should know   November 2, 2007

The 1980s was a great time for television sketch comedy, but some of it seems very unfunny nowadays. A whole bunch of these old shows have been re-released on DVD, but a lot of them have a definite pre-"The Day Today", pre-"The Fast Show" air, and seem to have come from another planet. A slower planet with obvious jokes. A Bit of Fry and Laurie has held up pretty well, and so has Victoria Wood's "As Seen on TV". Not The Nine O'Clock News has its moments, despite being the oldest of the lot. It's a shame that the only DVDs of Not The Nine O'Clock News are edited highlights. I can barely Alas Smith Jones.br /br /On the other hand, Naked Video nowadays seems incredibly poor, and so does KYTV, and I do not anticipate buying a Phil Cool DVD if it is ever released. The Mary Whitehouse Experience is about 90% dross, but perhaps it always was 90% dross. I don't think the first few series of French Saunders have come out yet. Vic Reeves' Big Night Out doesn't make me laugh, although it didn't make me laugh when it was on the first time, yet I still watched it; it mades my mind boggle, I like that.br /br /Alexei Sayle had two different shows. "Stuff" had a conceptual bent, and tried to paint a picture of Britain, and society, and the universe and stuff, with lots of Monty Python-esque sequences whereby the end credits would play in the middle of the programme. Then he did The All New Alexei Sayle Show, which was a relatively conventional character-based sketch show stroke stand-up comedy outlet, along the lines of Ben Elton's The Man from Auntie. I believe he may have done a third show, that nobody watched, and now he writes about cars for the newspapers. And he is very good at this, I have read some of his columns and they are witty and clever. Hats off to the man.br /br /You can tell I'm lukewarm about this show. That's why I'm writing so much about comedy in general without writing about "Stuff" specifically. At the time, I thought it was funny, but I was ten years old. The sight of a bald man saying CREP in a Scouse accent, with gusto, was hilarious, but nowadays the show just seems to consist of Alexei Sayle saying the word CREP a lot, and "bastard", which has lost all of its power, although his delivery is great. He really makes it sound violent. He is the reason why people nowadays say "BAStud" instead of "barstard".br /br /I love his newspaper motoring columns and I'm sure he's an interesting man to pin down, but I get the impression in this series that he only had a certain amount of stand-up material, and that he had to dilute it - he had to tone it down, and stretch it out. There's a massive list of guest writers who must have cancelled each other out. A typical joke might go "modern life is crap, especially if you're a fat bastard - and I should know, I'm a fat bastard". This is mixed with a kind of pseudo-intellectualism whereby there are references to Karl Marx and religion etc. The typical joke might continue "Karl Marx, author of The Communist Manifesto, was a fat bastard, and he thought that modern life was crap as well". He will then fold in the word zeitgeist, and say something zany about elephants and rubber hoses. The combination of generally clean colour footage and references to Margaret Thatcher (equals distant past) is unnerving. The Python-esque oddness feels like something that was added in post-production.br /br /Apart from the monologues there are also sketches, but they feel as if they have been added in from another show. Some of them do not have Alexei Sayle. They could just as easily have been rewritten for Phil Cool or Smith Jones or Ben Elton etc. They have guest stars who were all over the place at the time, including Angus Deayton from when he was an actor, Mark Williams from before he was famous as that bloke from the television, and Felicity Montagu from years before "I'm Alan Partridge". I have no great desire to buy series two or three of Alexei Sayle's Stuff. Perhaps I'll get the first series of The All-New etc when it comes out (there were two series).br /br /The glimpses of city streets are nostalgic, however. Alexei Sayle's Stuff has a deliberately ugly air, and it's perhaps more valuable as a cultural document than a comedy show. I remember one show had Harriet Thorpe in a bodice, and she looked fantastic.br /br /It has canned laughter. No substantial DVD extras.

2 out of 5 stars Showing its age   August 21, 2007

I came to this DVD with a head full of happy memories; I enjoyed Alexei on TV in my youth and remembered odd snippets that would make me laugh for years after. Thing is, I just rented it and could barely bring myself to sit through. I hardly laughed, and when I did it was not with any great enthusiasm. Maybe it's a case of my tastes changing over time, or maybe it's because I've since seen such a lot of great comedy (The Day Today, Armando Iannucci, Mighty Boosh, Stewart Lee...) Whatever the reason, I'm disappointed to report that Alexei doesn't float my boat anymore, or at least, he doesn't on screen. I still love his short stories and recommend them to all (give it another twenty years though...)

5 out of 5 stars I love the songs too   July 15, 2007

Anybody who fails to belly laugh during the word association song hasn't got a sense of humour. This is Alexei at his best. Don't bother getting series 2 and 3, you'll only be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Bloody canned laughter   June 27, 2007

Great DVD I watched it when it was first out in 1988, brilliant show very very funny. They should bring it back on BBC not on digital or sky they just cut things up with adverts and that is really annoying and the other thing that is annoying is that some stupid git has put canned laughter over it what's the idea around that?. Completley missed the point with Alexie Sayle he walk's around the streets telling joke's and you have to listen to what he's saying and you cann't do that because your being piss off with the laughter in the background, They should re-record them and take the damed thing off. Needless to say i watched the DVD to the end....I just switched the sound off and put the sub-titles on and you shouldn't have to do that AAAAAHHHH. Having said all that it is a great DVD well worth buying if you can put up with the unnessasary laughter.

This is Alexie at his best, as i remember him. Its so good I'm going to get the other dvd's in the series.br /I only wish he'd get back on the air instead of swanking it up wherever he swanks.br /This dvd is proof that jews do more than just sell carpets and shout at walls, they think too. Hes a scouse as well aint he, funny man.br /Buy it and be half as dissapointed for half the price of a handjob outside Dixons.
