Amazon.co.uk Review In the vastly overrated 1998 book iEasy Riders, Raging Bulls,/i author Peter Biskind puts the blame for Hollywood's blockbuster mentality at least partially on Steven Spielberg's box-office success with this adaptation of Peter Benchley's bestselling novel. But you can't blame Spielberg for making a terrific movie, which iJaws/i definitely is. The story of a Long Island town whose summer tourist business is suddenly threatened by great-white-shark attacks on humans bypasses the potboiler trappings of Benchley's book and goes straight for the jugular with beautifully crafted, crowd-pleasing sequences of action and suspense supported by a trio of terrific performances by Roy Scheider (as the local sheriff), Richard Dreyfuss (as a shark specialist), and particularly Robert Shaw (as the old fisherman who offers to hunt the shark down). The sequences on Shaw's boat--as the three of them realize that in fact the shark is hunting them--are what entertaining moviemaking is all about. --iMarshall Fine/i

Gonna need a bigger boat... October 23, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This a definate 5 star movie. One of the best films ever made. Dont listen to anyone who says the shark looks fake because it looks a damn site better than any recent CGI attempts(Deep Blue Sea). Its got that whole Speilberg feel about it, the little town of Amity might as well be the same town in ET or Poltergiest. br /Essentially its 2 movies. The first act follows Chief Brody as he discovers there is a great white shark off the coast of his little town, picking off swimmers. The second act follows Brody, Hooper and Quint as they try to track and catch said shark. The scene on board the Orca where Quint and Hooper compare scars, which then leads to the revelation that Quint is a survivor of the USS Indianappolis, is one of the finest acting performances of all time. br /I dont imagine there are many people out there who havent seen this movie but if you havent then your in for a treat. The 30th anniversary edition comes in a nice fold out box and has loads of well watchable special features on it. One of my all time favourite films. Up there with Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
No bite. August 9, 2008 4 out of 17 found this review helpful
This film is about the ridiculous situation of a big fish attacking people at the beach and a policeman killing the fish. A bit like a psycho Captin Birdseye only without a beard. The big fish is a rubber one that moves terribly and the fake ocean scenes are as bad as the fish! Ive swam in the sea before and the only thing that got me was a jellyfish. I cannot believe that films like this were made. Thank the lord for sensible films about fish like Piranha or Killerfish, believable approaches to the perils of fish.br /br /Also, why do they have to have a pirate in the story? Or go down in a cage? If a big fish was swimming about you just wouldnt go into the water after it. This film is silly.
A timeles Classic July 10, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A classic. Once you sit down and watch on a wide screen with a good quality DVD. This film is great.
