Amazon.co.uk Review Vin Diesel is game to soften his tough-guy image in iThe Pacifier/i, in which he plays hot-shot Navy S.E.A.L. Shane Wolfe, whose latest mission goes awry when the scientist he's sent to rescue is popped off before he can tell Wolfe where he's hidden some Top Secret software something-or-other. Before you can say iKindergarten Cop/i, Wolfe is assigned guard duty at the scientist's family home, where he's left with some unruly kids when the widow (Faith Ford) takes off to Switzerland to claim her hubby's safety deposit box under the guidance of Wolfe's superior officer. The trouble with this paint-by-numbers fish-out-of-water kiddie comedy is that Diesel himself is a fish out of water in the movie--he's no comic and is far funnier when he's unintentionally spoofing macho heroics in iThe Chronicles of Riddick/i. The film limply throws everything it can at you, including the idea of Wolfe directing a community theater production of iThe Sound of Music/i, but is just biding its time until the predictable action climax and hugs-all-around denouement. Vin doesn't look embarrassed, but the supporting cast sure does, especially iEverybody Loves Raymond/i's Brad Garrett as a bombastic vice principal and iGilmore Girls'/i Lauren Graham as Garrett's boss and Diesel's sudden love interest.i--Steve Wiecking, Amazon.com/i

ho hum June 7, 2008 this is a very bad movie.watching this is like cutting yourself all over and crushing a 1000 lemons putting the juice in a bath and then getting in the bath
Cute and charming... January 16, 2008 A rarity, a charming, funny film that doesn't really try too hard, tugs the heart strings a little, makes you smile and laugh and generally cheer for the good guys. Vin Diesel is an actor that I enjoy watching and that's why I bought this, I watched it over again because it is charming film. It was nice to see him break away from the rebel on the edge type movies for which he is known.
IF YOU NEED A GOOD BABYSITTER CALL VIN DIESEL!! December 31, 2007 There was nothing else on so I thought I would sit and watch Mr Diesel in this comedy about babysitting 5 children. The only difference with this to all the others this was very funny and it worked really well. Everything about the film was watchable and I have to say Vin Diesel was brillant in this film it was nice to see him in a different role. If you are looking for a good family movie then buy this you won't regret it.
Takes real risks... brings off the whole thing marvellously October 6, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I liked this movie, but my younger kids adored it. That was the difference. We talked quite a lot about it both immediately after the movie, that we saw at the local multiplex, and some six months afterwards. The film certainly made a deep impression on MY kids, that is for sure. br /br /Vin Diesel is actually perfect for the title role, and in fact his very clumsiness that has been observed here, far from being ineptitude, is in fact carrying the whole point. This is far from being a "cute" movie. It deals with terrible events in the life of a family; again, the loss of a parent (a common theme these days, "Land before time", etc), and Vin Diesel's best intentioned and often tremendously slapstick take on the whole thing works well at the kind of level that joyously takes you away from the pain. I think the guy in the role of marine becoming hard and love-at-any-cost parent is a wonderful thing, and as finely done as I have ever seen.br /br /But the undercurrent of the film - not obvious perhaps until you leave the cinema and it hits you some time later - is that Diesel's character in a way is hosting the Dad who we hardly see. He has been invisibly present throughout the film, and the family's love and coherence is a testimony to the integrity of this man, who has gone. The little dance for the small boy is the perfect vehicle for this rememberance. At this point I realised that this film was nothing more than a sincere and moving homage to fatherhood itself.br /br /You might well miss this; but the cinema was dead quiet at that point. And like "Uncle Buck", if you have the eyes to see it, this film holds a tremendous and warm message; a love letter addressed to anyone who is a daddy; very remarkable.br /br /I thoroughly recommend it.br /br /
Watchable, good for kids... June 4, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm a big fan of cute happy-ending-type family films, and an even bigger fan of the gorgeous Vin Diesel, but unfortunately putting those 2 things together doesn't quite work. Despite the very sweet on-set clips of Vin Diesel messing around with the kids and seeming like a genuinely great and funny guy, he doesn't quite transfer this to film and he can't seem to make the comedy work despite obviously trying hard. br /br /He's not helped by an incredibly predictable script that throws in every cliche it possibly can, but doesn't develop any of the characters enough to make you care about them, with the possible exception of the youngest girl. In the end, the film decends into a slapstick farce and loses anything resembling realism in a kind of weird parody of Spy Kids/Mission Impossible.br /br /Still despite the poor script and predictability, and the fact that Vin Diesel is better suited to action movies, this film is still watchable, and any kids who are looking for undemanding entertainment might get some smiles from it.br /br /Special features wise, there's a short gag reel, a few brief deleted scenes, an audio commentary from writers and the director, a very cute look at Vin Diesel on set, and a look at Brad Garret's irritating character.br /br /If you want a similar but better family film where a jaded guy warms to life because of cute kids, try the excellent Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, which has more heart and more humour.
