2 out of 5 stars Meh   October 24, 2008
The film is OK, and probably undeserving of the ire in many of the reviews here, but it's not a patch on the series itself, which is one of the finest things ever to come out of the BBC.br /br /To me, the Christmas special will always be the "true" LoG movie.

Been a fan of the league for years! First saw the film on the big screen, I thought it was good, but since watching it again on dvd several times I do think it's a real grower and quite clever!

3 out of 5 stars Another British TV Classic Dissapoints on Film   January 9, 2008

I have been a fan of the League since their Radio 4 show. Unfortunately, since then it been a process of diminishing returns. Series 1- a classic; series 2 - excellent, though the "special stuff" plot strand is a damp squib; series 3- a curate's egg and wildly uneven. However you slice it, that isn't bad for 3 years on TV (2000-2002). Worringly, the christmas special shown between series 2 and 3 is arguably their best work. This movie is all they have produced apart for a live DVD since their last series in 2002.br /br /A clever idea, as many reviewers have said, but it is a product of cold ingenuity that I think will alienate many of their fans. I don't find the "plight" of "pigeonholed" rich, acclaimed actor/writers funny or, crucially, sympathetic. Perhaps I'm the typical fan of a cult tv show that loses rapport with a series when it gains a wider audience.br /br /Don't get me wrong - great acting, the odd laugh - yes. Just not an essential purchase.

4 out of 5 stars good bad or maby both!   November 13, 2007

when i heard that the league were bringing out a film i was intrigued to see what kind of style they had used. being an avid league fan i bought the film. it was good but different. i didnt get how thay had killed of tubbs and edward in series 3 and than put them in the film. one of my favorite characters papa lazarou should have had more of a part as he is a firm fan favorite. br /br /overall the film is good but you will have to be open minded to enjoy the film fully only buy this if you have seen all 3 series as you will get lost if you havnt

3 out of 5 stars The League of Gentlemen?... Extraordinary   September 20, 2007

If you've read other plot lines for ''Apocalypse'' you'll probably understand the basic outline of the movie. (With the Royston Vasey inhabitants realising that they are only 2-dimensional fictional characters, they come to look for creators - Jeremy Dyson, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith - and try to persuade them to continue the TV series, fearing they would cease to exist otherwise.) A clever and innovative idea to begin with; the acting is superb and the animation, - especially of the Homunculus - is classic. br /br /Rather refreshingly, the movie concentrates on the more obscure characters from the telly show. And easily the funniest creation from LoG to begin with, Geoff Tipps (or St.George of Asda, as he is heroically crowned) is also the pinnacle figure of the movie providing all of the laugh out loud moments. Shearsmith delivers his lines with his customary Northern charm and lovable churlishness. Most of the humour relies on subtlety, a lot of which I missed on the first viewing. But after watching again and again, I am pleased to say there's something new to laugh at each time. Not much in the way of ''Have you heard the one about the Mau mau'', but this is exactly why the film appeals to a select audience: there's no sign of the catchphrases and familiar jokes that perhaps the fans of the TV show were hoping for. It's not in essence a feature length League of Gentlemen movie - it's instead a movie which happens to feature a few of the characters dreamt up for the TV show.br /br /There's a greater depth behind the humour and ideas, that sadly may have gone to waste if viewers are switching off after 30 minutes. A lot of TV-to-big screen productions can't work as they're basically stretching out a plot that would have otherwise been crammed into a half hour show. ''Apocalypse'' offers a melting pot of ideas and allows the 'Gents to showcase their wider talents as artists, as opposed to comedians. The actual comedy here lies in the basic rule of perfect delivery utter conviction of the parts, equally balanced with that air of macabre familiar with all LoG fans. In all agreement with a lot of other reviews: No, it isn't a patch on the outstandingly brilliant TV show, but as far as films go, it's quite extraordinary in it's own right.
