The weakest season yet, but still essential viewing. June 13, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
In season 4 of this excellent cop drama, Vic Mackey now answers to Captain Rawlings (Glenn Close) who brings a tough new leadership to the barn. The strike team has split acrimoniously. Shane works vice, Lem works with juvenile delinquents and Vic and Ronny still work violent crime out of the barn. When gangster Antwon Mitchell begins to make Shanes life difficult, the team put their differences aside to put him behind bars or in a grave, whichever's easiest.br /br /Whilst season 4 doesn't quite hit the dizzying heights of the three previous seasons, the shield is still far and away the best drama on the box. Anthony Anderson brings real menace to his role as the ruthless gang boss Antwon, possibly the strike teams most dangerous adversary yet. Glenn Close does a reasonable job as Rawlings and Michael Chiklis is on form as usual as the corrupt, murdering detective Mackey.br /br /Like this? Try: The Shield: seasons 1-3br / The Wire: seasons 1-3
Good TV cop drama that doesn't hit the heights of earlier seasons April 2, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
With the Strike Team disbanded at the end of season three, this year sees the Barn very much in flux. Lem has been transferred to another department; as has Shane, who is getting in over his head with drug dealer Antwon Mitchell; Vic Mackey is somewhat adrift without his team mates; and new captain Monica Rawling is stirring up Farmington with her new policy of seizing the assets of arrested criminals. Unfortunately, this sense of disarray takes over the show itself, which lacks the purpose and direction of previous years.br /br /The usual cast are all on top form once again, but the big new addition for season four is Glenn Close as Captain Rawling. Close fits into the show very well, bringing a new element of tension into the Barn as she bangs heads with Mackey in a different way to former boss David Aceveda, who has finally moved on to the city council. Another worthy addition to the show is Anthony Anderson, an actor best known for comedy who gets a chance to show his dramatic side and is excellent as trouble-making drug kingpin Antwon.br /br /The problem here is that for the first time since the show began, The Shield is starting to feel as though it's sliding into more typical TV cop drama territory. The over-arching storyline lacks the weight of previous years, and even the sub plots (Dutch sniffing around Vic's ex-wife, and Aceveda's disturbing visits to a prostitute) peter out before going anywhere interesting. The whole thing culminates in a lacklustre finale, which is only notable for setting up a plot point that will become central to season five. br /br /If you're a fan, this is still a worthwhile collection of episodes. A sub par season of The Shield is still better than ninety percent of cop dramas, but year four falls unfortunately short of its own very high standards.

brilliant series, it needs to be watched froom series one, the characters and story line is addictive!
Another good season but...... January 18, 2006 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
I think season 4 and season 3 aswell just falls short of the first two great seasons. The big talking point in this series is the inclusion of Glenn Close who plays the new captain and also the new villain played by Anthony Anderson. The plotline in season 4 is just a little bit boring for me. Anothony Andersons role in the series was enjoyable but I feel it played out too long and drawn out just to keep Anderosn in the show till the end. At the begining I didn't really get/like the Captain Rawlings(Close) character but I have to say I began to like her especially towards the end. pI miss the good old days when the strike team were knocking down doors and doing their dirty business but there is very little of that now. This season the strike team are not together anymore and without them the show doesn't feel the same as before.pAnyway, I still think the season was very good. I actually loved the Glenn Close and Anthony Anderson character and the whole storyline with Shane and a lot more but I dont want to spoil it for you. I think my review comes out more negative than anything else because Im comparing this to seasons 1 and 2 which were far superior in my view. Dont let my negatives put you off this as it is one of the most unique TV shows ever made. From my understanding this is just the beginning of the best were gonna see from the show, the way the season ended and also from what I hear about season 5, it seems its gonna be back to its best.pOh yeah, this season 4 and season 3 better be released here in Europe, we're suffering out here.
