Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Rightly winning wide acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, this latest take on Jane Austen?s classic IPride Prejudice/I is a real, all-round triumph. The age-old story still holds real resonance, and it follows the tale of five sisters dealing with love, and the many trials and tribulations that brings. P There are so many delights to director Joe Wright?s take on the story, and his direction is a strong place to start. In spite of having to condense the tale to fit a movie running time, he nonetheless injects a real energy and intelligence to his retelling, and he?s served supremely well by his cast. Backed up by strong support by the likes of Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland, it?s Keira Knightley in the lead turn who?s a real surprise here. Her performance is a real joy, and very much at the core of the film?s success. P The film inevitably draws comparison with the superb 1995 BBC adaptation, and while arguably it doesn?t quite scale the same peaks, it?s to the credit of the filmmakers that their version still holds strong. For this is a tremendously enjoyable drama, and one that should continue to find an audience for a long time to come. An excellent film.--ISimon Brew/I

4 out of 5 stars "modern" version   January 8, 2009

I love this movie, have watched it numerous times and will continue to watch it. Yes, it is different to the Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth adaptation (that one is 'pefection'?) and that is the point - be prepered for something different to the Ehle/Firth version. The cast had a lot to live up to and they do a "capital" job in this adaptation. The soundtrack is SUPERB. There are very good additional notes and interviews on the dvd. An all round great movie and package - highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Bitterly disappointed   January 6, 2009

Having read all the possible works of Austen, I decided to watch the adaptations of her works as well. Some like SS (the movie and BBC version) blew me away, whilst others like ITV's 'Mansfield Park' left me cursing. I knew when I heard about this version from others I'd either LOVE it to pieces or wish to wipe it from memory. I'm sorry to say, (and no I haven't watched the 95 version yet) this movie left me feeling cold for most of the part. Yes, they had to squeeze the novel into a record 2 hrs and had to compromise but the choice to hack the important parts was awful. Trying to compensate it with a Bronte atmosphere gave me little chance to celebrate as well. The fact, we never see the attraction between Wickham and Elizabeth or Darcy and Elizabeth left so much to be desired. I have nothing against any of the actors, but their intrpretation was just too much to bear. Darcy is as dismal as the British weather, KK is either giggly or pouty (not a layered heroine), Wickham gorgeous but bland, Lydia is loud (but not silly just hormonal) Caroline is snipey (unable to hold herself against Lizzie) Bingely - just a clown and Collins is just plain nasty. Don't even get me started on Mr and Mrs Bennet! First of all, what I can't fathom is, why they even have a functional relationship? They may still love each other, yes but not once in the book is it indicated that Mr Bennet enjoys being around his wife more than necessary - that means they are only likely to see each other at meal times, or at Church! Not in the drawing room having a full-blown debate over the new neighbours without their daughters present. That just meant that the parents had authority in the household, which in fact, they didn't. Thus, Jane and Lizzie's role in the house are significantly diminshed (part of the charm of their characters)br /br /I admit, I expected too much from this movie. Maybe, a more rigid adaptation than what was given. But, I cannot forgive that they have stripped away the story's escapism charm and turned it into a dumbed down chick flick. Yes, Lizzie marries Mr Darcy, but she also marries the guy who is her soul-mate for LOVE not gratitude or the fact he's the only single, wealthy man in a 10 mile radius *shakes head* Maybe, I shouldn't have read the book first, then I would have been able to appreciate this fairytale of a movie - where Lizzie is a character you pray to God, that you are nothing like or you probably see her as a best friend. NO! NO! This Elizabeth Bennet (sorry KK) is beautiful and I won't hold it aginst her, but NOT the woman I read about in the novel or the woman every girl wants to become. Dear Lord, I don't think I can talk much more about this, its so awful. The only good thing about this was Mary, she was such a gem (even tho she's meant to be dull - but she seemed like the sensible apart from Jane) :)br /I think I'll try the 95 version next I think. If its any better it'll hopefully remove this version from my memory. If not, I'll just read the book again! =)

1 out of 5 stars Memorable for the wrong reasons   January 3, 2009

This film was a box office success so its appeal must be there somewhere. Only guessing, could it be the cute Keira or the preternaturally moody Matthew? Who knows? Box office success or not, this outing is monumentally bad. br /br /Special things to watch for, its dizzying peaks of awfulness, if you're unlucky enough to catch it are Donald Sutherland who chose to play Mr Bennet dressed, somewhat surprisingly, as a tramp and, not to be outdone in the awfulness stakes, Keira Knightley who chose to play Lizzy variously and, seemingly randomly, with a cheesy grin, pouting or being childish. Ms Knightley received an Oscar nomination for 'Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role' (2005), so I must be missing something. Oh well...br /br /The film's single, saving grace is the majestic performance of Judi Dench, arguably the finest actress of our times, as Lady Catherine, but all in all, it's a film to avoid if you can. (All fans will know the BBC 1995 version, of course, but if you haven't seen it yet, you might care also to try the BBC 1980 version for its wonderful acting, Fay Weldon script and sparkling, Austenesque irony.)

5 out of 5 stars A burst of sunshine   December 31, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

It's one of those days when the skies are heavy and grey and endless rain pours onto your window, you just wish that the summer would come back and then Pride Prejudice suddenly appears in your head. br /This film is like a burst of sunshine for me, it's full of endless greenery, sunsoaked (and lazy) days and beautiful homes. The beginning is perfect, Lizzy (Keira Knightley) is up at dawn and as the sun rises over a lush field we see her walking and finishing a book at the same time, nobody is around to distract her and she doesn't even have to take her eyes off the page to see where she is going. Next to no time she arrives back at her beautiful farmhouse home, we get a glimpse of what the rest of her family are up to while she wanders for a little more.br /The whole film is virtually this perfect; their pace of life is wonderful, they seem to live in a 'no rush' style. br /Everytime I watch this, I always wish that I lived in the countryside instead of this bleak city, it just makes me want to go for long walks and take my own time with life (just like the Bennett's.)br /It's a must-see for anyone who dislikes the winter and needs a little bit of sunshine back in their lives, it's also good for when you've had a very bad day, doctors should recommend this for a whole range of treatments. br /Bring on summer 2009.

3 out of 5 stars it's Byronic when it should be ironic   December 23, 2008

This film is quite enjoyable, but I just don't understand why someone would adapt one of the greatest writers in the English language so disrespectfully. The overblown romance is totally incompatible with the original and with Jane Austen generally. The ridiculous ending isn't in the book - and tallies with the kind of nonsense Jane Austen sent up in Northanger Abbey. br /br /The pleasure of Jane Austen's work is in the restraint of the romance and the credibility of the story. It's as if Joe Wright, the director, had the arrogance to 'improve' on the book without understanding what was so good about it. So don't judge Jane Austen by this. The 1995 BBC series is so much better, mainly because Andrew Davies actually knew and respected the source. He even managed to add in some naughty fun without radically changing anything. Joe Wright apparently didn't read the book, and it shows.br /br /It doesn't help that the period costumes range from around 1770 to 1830 - it's unlikely that people in the same room will be in clothes 60 years apart. Do they really think we're so stupid we don't know they superimposed Stanage Edge behind Chatsworth, which just happens to hold half the contents of the British Museum? And why, when Jane Austen writes for laughs, is the whole things so ruddy miserable?br /br /That said, there are, positives. Dario Marinelli's soundtrack is a masterpiece and rightfully deserved it's Oscar. Matthew Macfadyen was a good idea as Darcy. Even desecrated like this, the story is still pretty good, so if you try and think of it as nothing to do with Jane Austen it's a three star.
