great acting, distressing movie July 3, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This movie may seem attractive to greyhound owners or animal lovers in general, but if you're either of those and are upset by scenes of cruelty (even if they are only "suggested") I would not recommend it. The acting performances were excellent, but the story is fairly formulaic with an ending reminiscent of "Kes". That said, if you are a fan of either Ken Stott or Robert Carlyle, or of British drama in general you may well enjoy it.
distressing August 16, 2006 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
For non dog lovers only! Contains scenes of extreme cruelty which are hard to watch. We know these things go on - we have rescued greyhounds ourselves - but we don't want to watch them in the name of entertainment. Excellent actors wasted in a loosely political, loosely emotional hotchpotch which doesn't commit itself to anything and is certainly not the feel-good film it promised to be. Avoid this film!
Not top flight but still worth watching June 4, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I saw this recently when I rented it and was charmed by the story and acting. It is a "feelgood" story but what's wrong with that? Robert Carlisle is particuarly good as is Gillian Anderson who is almost unregonisable as the single mother from Belfast - complete with very credible accent. It makes a change for film to be about ordinary people. Give it a try!
Grim life of a greyhound May 8, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This film stars Robert Carlyle of Hamish Macbeth fame and Gillian Anderson (X files fame). It focuses on the life of a young boy Donal (Tyrone Mckenna)who is growing up in the Northern Ireland tensions in Belfast with his mum Kate (Gillian Anderson). Donal looks after the greyhounds of evil trainer good Joe (Ken Stott)br /br /With such an array of fine and accomplished actors it comes as no surprise to see that the characters are realistic and the gritty nature of the subject matter is shown. Andersons Belfast accent was a pleasantly well executed surprise. However on the subject of executions... as an animal lover I was horrifed to see the graphic portrail of violence against the dogs that was sadly necessary to portray the real life cruelty of what goes on in this "sport".br /br /Don't watch this if you are squeemish but this film is good in that it brings home to you the truth about what happens to these poor defenceless creatures.br /br /If you enjoyed Kes, then you will enjoy this. In fact it pretty much is Kes with greyhounds.
